2/9/04 - Charleston-Southern (4-12) @ High Point (12-8)

Panthers Win 80-73 in Overtime Thriller

High Point, NC - The High Point Panthers came out flat in this game played on a beautiful evening in High Point, North Carolina. The Panthers fell behind the Charleston-Southern Buccaneers by a much as 15 points at one point in the first half, but would cut the lead to 8 at halftime, as the Buccaneers would lead at halftime 32-24 in the Mills Athletic and Convention Center. The Panthers came out on fire in the second half, however, as they began to light it up from three point range. The Panthers would end the day going 8/17 on threes, or hitting them at a clip of 47%. The Panthers eventually took a 41-35 lead early in the second half. Both teams would trade leads throughout the game. Demon Conklin hit a three point basket that put High Point up 64-61 with 32 seconds remaining, but the Buccanneers answered with a three of their own, making it 64-64. High Point's buzzer beater attempt fell short as time expired, and the game was headed for overtime.

In the overtime period, both teams hung around until early as both teams would trade leads several times in the opening minutes of the extra period. Eventually, High Point would hit several key shots and nail crucial free throws to escape with a 7 point win. The fans at the Panthers' Den rejoiced, as their Panthers were still in contention for a Big South regular season championship with the win.

Coach Frizzell had mixed feelings about the game. "Well, we played horrible early on in the game. We just stunk. I could smell how bad we were playing. In the second half, we got some open three point buckets and we converted for what seems to be the first time this year. We tried to get the ball down to the low post and I'd say it worked pretty well, as both Michael Leonard and Alex Allen ended the game with double-doubles. The defense was also forced to collapse, leaving some of our shooters open on the perimeter, and they hit those crucial jumpshots. I was impressed with our composure in overtime. Our guys were not rattled at all and I was happy about that. All in all, it was a good game because we won, but we certainly could have played better."

2/16/04 - Birmingham-Southern (9-11) @ High Point (14-8)

High Point Wins 72-52 on Senior Night

High Point, NC - The final game at the Mills Athletic and Convention Center of the 2003-2004 regular season was played tonight. High Point jumped out to an early 15-5 lead and never looked back as they went on to win the game for the seniors 72-52. High Point shot the ball pretty well, but really shined on defense. High Point held Birmingham-Southern to just 38.5% shooting and forced them into 20 turnovers compared to just 8 assists.

Coach Frizzell opted to start senior Demon Conklin in place of Vince Hodge tonight in tribute to Conklin, since he is a senior. Conklin responded in a big way, drilling 3 three pointers en route to a season-high 16 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Fellow senior center Alex Allen scored 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists in the game. "Our 2 seniors on the team really stepped up and delivered tonight," commented Coach Frizzell. "I am very happy for them."

Coach Frizzell was overall impressed with the way his team played in the game. "Well, we did more of what we have been doing, and that has seemed to work. We switched between a 2-3 zone and 1-3-1 zone most of the game and that really seemed to slow down Birmingham-Southern's offense. On offense, we just passed the ball around, looking for open jumpshots and layups. We mixed in a little pick and roll to throw off the defense and that seemed to work as well."

2/21/04 - High Point (15-8) @ Radford (6-15)

Panthers Edge Out Highlanders in Overtime 84-77

Radford, VA - The High Point Panthers came into the game on a season-high 6 game winning streak looking to make it 7. Though they were successful, it was sure close. The Panthers went into the overtime period with a 65-65 tie, but outscored the Highlanders 19-12 in the extra period to go on to win the game 84-77. The win extends the Panthers' win streak to 7 games and their record to 16-8 (11-4).

Coach Frizzell was impressed with his team's poise in the overtime period. "Well, we played pretty well I thought. We went on the road for the first time in 4 games and I felt we played pretty well. It took us an extra period to win, but I will take that with a big 'ole smile on my face. We displayed some nice poise in overtime and I think we play very well in close games, which is a great quality to have. Overall, I was impressed."
