The Earl of Baltimore Returns -- MLB:The Show 08 -- PS2

Baltimore, MD - The Baltimore Orioles announced today the hiring of a new manager, former manager, and Hall of Famer, Earl Weaver. Earl Weaver has returned to try to resurect this faltering franchise and try to return it to the glory days of the '70s.

Level: All-Star
Sliders: kingdavid's cpu vs. cpu (from MLB:The Show 07) (all new sliders are at default.
Games: Spring training games will be simmed. All others will be managed.
Rosters: Current 40-man & active rosters as of opening day (3/30/08) (as close as I could get them outside of franchise mode with ps2)

Roster Movement: Only actual players will be used.

An Interview with the Manager

Reporter: May I have an interview with you Mr. Weaver before tonight's game?

Weaver: Sure. Have a seat.

Reporter: Would you say that you are an emotional leader or a decision maker?

Weaver: I'm more of a decision maker.

Reporter: Are you more of an optimist or more of a problem solver?

Weaver: Neither one, probably, although I will give the veterans every chance to work their way out of a slump.

Reporter: Would you say that you favor a set lineup or a rotation system?

Weaver: I love to platoon players based on matchups but right now my lineup is basically a set one.

Reporter: Do you prefer good offensive players or do you like glove men?

Weaver: I prefer either one or the other. Sometimes you're lucky enough to get a player who is both, but more times than not they are either one or the other. Years ago, I had players like Paul Blair, Mark Belanger and Rick Dempsey. They were defensive specialists in my mind.

Reporter: Do you like an offense based on power, speed, or high averages?

Weaver: Power.

Reporter: Do you try to use the entire roster or do you keep people sitting on the bench?

Weaver: I try to define roles for the players and use everybody.

Reporter: Do you like a big-inning offense or do you like to use one-run strategies?

Weaver: I am probably the most outspoken person in favor of the big inning that you will ever find.

Reporter: Do you pinch-hit much and if so, when?

Weaver: In the past I used to stack my bench with extra first basemen and outfielders so that I could pinch-hit for one of my many defensive specialists that would be in my lineup at times.

Reporter: Do you use the sacrifice bunt often?

Weaver: No. I hate to bunt. Each of the 27 outs in a game is precious and I don't like to give outs away.

Reporter: Do you like to use a running game?

Weaver: No.

Reporter: In what circumstances would you use an intentional walk?

Weaver: Whenever there's a blizzard in hell.

Reporter: Do you hit and run?

Weaver: No.

Reporter: Do you like power pitchers or pitcher who tend to put the ball in play?

Weaver: I like pitchers who throw strikes.

Reporter: Would you stay with a starter or do you go to the bullpen more quickly?

Weaver: I'll stay with my starters for as long as I can.

Reporter: Do you use a four man rotation or do you go with the five man rotation that is used around the majors?

Weaver: I use a four man rotation. I think that it is easier to find four guys who can pitch than it is five.

Reporter: Do you try to use the entire staff or do you try to get five or six people to do most of the work?

Weaver: I try to get as many innings as I can out of my front four (starters).

Reporter: What would you say are your strongest points as a manager?

Weaver: Intelligence, intensity, patience and an understanding of how an offense works.

The "National Anthem" starts to play in the background.

Reporter: I'm sorry sir. I've kept you too long.

Weaver: That's okay, kid. It happens all the time.

At least we made it interesting!

As you read, Adam Jones, who was on 2nd, only got to 3rd base on the hit by Brian Roberts. That is because he held up to see if the left fielder would catch the ball. The ball ended up glancing off his glove and Jones only was able to get to third. Obviously, he's not the fleetest of runners. I also screamed at Jay Payton. I had sent him to pinch hit for Luis Hernandez and Payton bunts. I know that it's a bunting situation, but Hernandez could have done that. I guess that I should have told Payton to swing away instead of just sending him to the plate.

Change is definately in the air, though. I had hired a farm director who's going to get the young pitchers developed. His specialty is pitching.

Thanks for responding and I will be following your's as well.
