Re: Penn State Nittany Lions (NCAA 09)

PSU hopes to reload, not rebuild
Spread HD offense requires some retooling for Nittanies to roar in 2009

STATE COLLEGE, PA - The first year of the "Spread HD" offense in Happy Valley was a smashing success. Daryll Clark was deadly efficient and Evan Royster ran for 1770 yards as a sophomore.

The good news is Clark and Royster are both back.

The bad news is basically everyone else is gone.

Tight end Andrew Quarless (568 yards, 5 TDs in 2008) and right guard Stefen Wisniewski are the only other returning starters. The dynamic trio of wideouts, Derrick Williams, Deon Butler and Jordan Norwood, are all gone. The four seniors along the offensive line are gone.

Luckily, Recruiting Coordinator Brian Kudron recruited for all of this last season, and the freshmen he brought in on offense will be counted on early. The two prize offensive line recruits, tackle Chris Ford and guard Carl Pearson, are expected to start from day one. Star freshman J.R. Howard is expected to be right in the thick of it at wide receiver, along with seniors Kevin Cousins and James McDonald and junior Brett Brackett. Royster returns in the backfield, but behind him is sophomore Stephfon Green (391 yards, 5 TDs in 2008) and the two most heralded freshmen running backs from last year's class, Brennan Craft and Mark Keyes.

The defense loses seven starters, and yet it isn't expected to miss a beat. Josh Gaines is replaced on the defensive line by Maurice Evans, who might be even better. Aaron Maybin returns at end after registering 10 sacks as a sophomore. Jared Odrick and Ollie Ogbu return at tackle. Sean Lee's absence at MLB will not be filled easily, but Josh Hull will get the first crack at it. At OLB, Navorro Bowman is expected to be a playmaker after a quiet but consistent 2008. Tyrell Sales is gone, and his replacement has not been set in stone. It appears to be between redshirt freshman Mike Yancich and redshirt sophomore Nathan Stupar. Redshirt sophomore Chris Colasanti has moved to the outside and could factor in here as well.

There are technically no returning starters in the secondary. A.J. Wallace was the nickel back last year, but he is supremely talented. Sophomore D'Anton Lynn had 28 tackles and 2 interceptions last year. True freshman David Harwell has impressed during fall practices, and should lock down the nickel spot. Still, there are only four true corners on the roster. At safety, Anthony Scirrotto's 101 tackles and 11 interceptions cannot be replaced immediately. Drew Astorino will carry the burden. At free safety, senior Knowledge Timmons steps in for the graduated Mark Rubin, but true freshman Tyler Jackson is already pushing him, and cannot be kept off the field. The #1 defensive player in the country during last season's recruiting cycle has been turning heads all throughout the preseason.

Jeremy Boone returns as the team's punter, and backup punter Ryan Breen has been converted into a placekicker to try to replace the Lou Groza Award winner, Kevin Kelly.

Penn State's non-conference schedule has a regional flavor to it, as they open up with Syracuse at home, they travel to Maryland to face the Terrapins, and they host Temple a week before one of the most highly anticipated non-conference games of the year: #22 Pittsburgh will travel to Happy Valley on September 19th. Believing that a weak schedule hurt them last season, the Penn State administration, along with head coach Joe Paterno, finally relented and agreed to restart the storied rivalry with the cross-state Panthers. Since the Nittany Lions obviously recruit the state of Pennsylvania hard and make a habit of going into Maryland for talent, the out of conference matchups with Maryland and Pittsburgh will go a long way toward this year's recruiting class.
