Canada crushed by missed spot kick

JOHANNESBURG (CP) - The shot came off Dwayne De Rosario's foot like a rocket. But Paul Robinson's finger managed to save England from a stunning draw.

Robinson stopped De Rosario's penalty kick in the 89th minute to allow John Terry's goal to hold up as the lone effort, giving England a 1-0 victory over the Canadians in Group H World Cup play.

As expected, England carried a majority of the play. But the match also proved that the Canadians are no slouches, and if one considers England the class of the group, Canada may just do well against Croatia and Uruguay in their next two matches.

The first real chance of the game was to Canada, in the 21st minute, as Atiba Hutchinson's cross found the head of Rob Friend, but could not evade the fingertip of Robinson. England responded shortly after, as a corner from the foot of Ashley Young found star striker Wanye Rooney, but the Man U star could only nail the crossbar, and then fire the rebound right at Canadian keeper Lars Hirschfeld.

England struck after Young was injured, forcing Stewart Downing to take the resultant corner kick. Downing's ball was headed off the line by Marcel de Jong, but Patrice Bernier, who had just entered the game, couldn't clear it, and Terry had an open net to deposit the ball.

The last 15 minutes of the match were all in England's end, as Canada ferociously attempted to pick up a draw. De Rosario was tripped at the edge of the box by Rio Ferdinand, and the official, who appeared to be very lenient towards Canada, pointed to spot despite the arguments from the English players. De Rosario fired the spot kick towards the lower right corner of the goal, but Robinson did a great job both in stopping the kick, and managing to then deflect it out of the box. While Canada kept the pressure on, they never had a serious chance again.

Canada will take on Croatia in a game where they must get points in order to hope to advance. England will move onto play Uruguay.

No goals, but a point

DURBAN (CP) - In a sport that is a little more familiar to Canadians, the goalie is the most important person on the ice. It is often said that when it comes to the NHL playoffs, the team that wins is the team that has the best goalie. The Canadian Men's National team has taken that to heart.

Lars Hirschfeld made six humongous saves, and although Canada was horrible outplayed by a far superior Croatian side, the Canucks picked up their first ever point in the World Cup, with a scoreless draw that may even put Canada in position to somehow advance to the second round.

Croatia came the closest to victory late in the match, as Luka Modric drilled the crossbar from 8 yards out. The rebound bounced right to Ivica Olic, who seemed poised to send Canada home, but Hirschfeld made an unbelievable diving stop, pushing the ball out of play. Croatia then hit the bar once again on the corner kick, but Julian De Guzman cleared the ball off the line.

Canada was outshot 18-2, as they had little pressure. They also received three yellow cards, as Croatia managed to outrun them constantly. It will be interesting to see how Canada holds up against Uruguay. If Canada draws Uruguay, and Croatia loses to England by two or more goals, Canada will be through, and in an extreme circumstance, they could go through without scoring a goal. A Canada win will put them through as long as Croatia does not beat England. A Croatia win or a Canada loss will eliminate the Canucks, as will ties in the remaining two matches. Michael Klukowski will miss Canada's final match, and it looks like Paul Stalteri will replace him in the lineup.

Game Summary
Croatia - 0, Canada - 0

Canada leaves South Africa with high hopes for future

BLOEMFONTEIN (CP) - Although Canada will not advance to the Round of 16 in the 2010 World Cup, there are plenty of reasons for Canadian soccer fans to finally believe that this team can be competitive on the world stage.

Atiba Hutchinson scored Canada's first ever goal at the World Cup, giving Canada a 1-1 draw with Uruguay and ensuring three quality performances in South Africa. Canada lost to England 1-0, but missed a late penalty, and then picked up points in their final two matches.

Canada was assured elimination after a nine-man England side got demolished 3-1 by Croatia. Both of those countries will advance from Group H, with Canada finishing ahead of Uruguay in the group on goal differential.

Uruguay jumped out to the lead off a long free kick from Diego Lugano that avoided Marcel de Jong and fell onto the foot of Diego Forlan. The Athletico Madrid striker fired the ball past a diving Lars Hirschfeld to make it 1-0.

Canada answered on a goal that may be in contention for goal of the tournament. Iain Hume took a short pass from Olivier Occean and took off on a 40 yard run down the right flank. Hume then found Atiba Hutchinson just insde the box with a perfect cross. Hutchinson fired on the straight volley into the top right corner, tying the match. Canada then dominated the entire second half but couldn't find the net again.

Canada will return home with two points, a goal, and a sense that Canadian soccer may become a power in CONCACAF in the near future. Only two years to qualifying.
