Team Outlook
Black & Gold: Saints News & Notes

Saints looking to improve upon last year's average finish

Coming off an 8-8 record and second place NFC South finish in 2003, the analytics have the New Orleans Saints expected to win one to two games less than last year.

Due to the uptick in strength of schedule, combined with player movement of the team, as well as others around the league, New Orleans has an expected win-loss rate of 6.6-9.4 according to the analytical data.

The division features the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the enigmatic Michael Vick-led Atlanta Falcons, and the Carolina Panthers who are coming off a three-point defeat to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Overall, it will be a tough hill to climb in order to outrank the Panthers and Falcons in pursuit of a playoff berth.

A lot is going to depend on QB Aaron Brooks for the team's performance, as there is no shortage of playmakers on offense. The team boasts plenty of weapons, so Brooks is going to have to protect the ball and get it in the hands of the likes of HB Deuce McAllister, WR Joe Horn, and WR Donte Stallworth without turning the ball over.

The biggest question mark for this team will be the defense. Last season, the team was pedestrian on this side of the ball, ranking middle of the road in most categories, but bottom of the barrel in rushing defense. The play on the defensive line will have to step up if the team wants any chance to compete for a Wild Card spot this year.

Star Power
Deuce McAllister (RB, 4th year, 6'1", 220 lbs); Joe Horn (WR, 9th year, 6'1", 205 lbs); Johnathan Sullivan (DT, 2nd year, 6'3", 315); Charles Grant (DE, 3rd year, 6'3", 280 lbs); Tebucky Jones (S, 7th year, 6'2". 218 lbs)

Draft Class
Rd.1 No.18 - Will Smith, DE - Ohio State
Rd.2 No.50 - Devery Henderson, WR - LSU
Rd.2 No.60 - Courtney Watson, LB - Notre Dame
Rd.5 No.139 - Rodney Leisle, DT - UCLA
Rd.5 No.156 - Mike Karney, FB - Arizona State
Rd.7 No.240 - Colby Bockwoldt, LB - Brigham Young

Key Additions
Brian Young (DT, 5th year, 6'2", 290 lbs, signed from St. Louis); Sam Gash (FB, 13th year, 6'0", 245 lbs, signed from Buffalo)

Key Subtractions
Dale Carter (CB, signed with Baltimore)

Minneapolis - Redshirt freshman QB Cade Cannon scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, picking up 100 yards on six runs. He also completed 8 of 9 pass attempts for 79 yards. Minnesota used a QB rotation as head coach Jerry Kill had indicated. Mitch Leidner and Chris Streveler were largely ineffective during their opportunities. Cannon, who was given the start, played the entire second half of Minnesota's season opening win.

New York Jets receive: LG Fred Weary (74 OV)
Houston Texans receive: QB Brooks Bollinger (73 OV)

Chris Mortensen's Analysis

This looks like a fair, low-profile trade that helps both teams as well as both players. Bollinger was sitting at 4th on the Jets' depth chart behind Pennington, Clemens, and Ramsey. In Houston, he could very well be the backup to David Carr at the start of the season, although Sage Rosenfels may have something to say about that. But he'll also have the opportunity to learn from Gary Kubiak, who is one of the brightest offensive minds in the game. If I'm Brooks Bollinger, I'm ecstatic about this change of scene. The Texans should be happy too, as they received some much needed depth at the QB position.

From New York's point of view, they traded away a fringe player and acquired a solid contributor. The Jets truly needed some help at guard, because behind the starters, they had only Isaac Snell (68 OV) and Steve Morley (64 OV) as their backups. Weary will instantly become the primary backup for both of New York's guards.

Overall, Brooks Bollinger is the real winner here, but both teams should be happy, as everybody filled a depth need. It's not the sexiest trade of the year, but it's a good, solid move that'll pay off in the long run.

Fast Facts

Team MVP: Victor Hobson, LOLB
Hobson was a playmaker in every sense of the word today, recording a sack and two forced fumbles. The turnovers caused by Hobson resulted in two New York scores, and one -- a hit on TE Chris Cooley at the Jets' 18 yardline -- may have prevented a Washington touchdown.

Who's Hot: Cedric Houston, RB
After leading the team in rushing last week in Tampa Bay, Houston was given a chance to work with the first team offense today, and he made the most of the opportunity by gaining 52 yards on 10 carries and catching 3 passes for another 52 yards. After these two strong performances, Houston appears to have the edge on the starting RB job halfway through the preseason.

Who's Not: Rashad Washington, FS
The backup free safety was directly responsible for both of the Redskins' second half touchdowns. In the 3rd quarter, running back TJ Duckett stiff-armed him en route to a 9 yard TD run. Then, in the 4th, David Patten torched him for a 43-yard score with 59 seconds left in regulation.

Play of the Game
Kellen Clemens' 37 yard touchdown pass to TE Chris Baker was a thing of beauty. With the pocket collapsing around him, he rolled out to his left, and then, throwing across his body, lofted a deep pass over the head of Redskin LB Warrick Holdman for the score.

Oklahoma State Prevails in Defensive Battle, Beat UCLA in OT 16-13

FINAL1234OTTOT
OKST (1-0)10000616
UCLA (0-1)0307313

PASADENA, Calif. -- It took a series of overtime play for the Oklahoma State Cowboys to shut the door on the UCLA Bruins and their comeback-rally attempt in the season opener on the road.

Vernand Morency squeezed his way through the o-line for the game-winning score after Oklahoma State's defense held UCLA to a field goal on the first series in OT.

UCLA fought back from a 10-0 deficit early in the game that saw Drew Olson throw four interceptions in the first two quarters for the Bruins. Chalk that up to nerves, though, as he bounced back in the second half to bring his team within striking distance to win the game in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter. Mismanagement of the clock, however, saw time expire as the team was closing in on an opportunity to kick a game-winning field goal.

"We didn't get down in time, and unfortunately the clock ran out before we could call timeout to setup the kick," said head coach Flacko Mars. "We had a few big drops that would have sealed the game, but sometimes that's how it goes."

Oklahoma State relied on freshman Donovan Woods behind center with the absence of their main signal caller Josh Fields who is nursing an ankle injury. On the other hand, the Bruins were without their core linebacker Spencer Havner (suspension), and lost defensive ends Kevin Harbour and Brigham Harwell during the game to injuries. Still, the shorthanded UCLA defense was able to stimy the Cowboys offense for the most part.

Overall, it was an ugly game in Pasadena, as the quarterback play was poor on both sides and neither offense could gather much if any momentum throughout.

Greatness Score: 593

Injury Update: Two Bruins were injured in this game: Starting LE Kevin Harbour (dislocated elbow - 10 weeks), and his backup LE Brigham Harwell (broken ribs - 2 weeks).
