The good ol' days VS. NCAA 06

When I was much younger (I'm now 28), my friends and I would play leagues on Tecmo Bowl, RBI Baseball, etc. We would make schedules, play all of the games on the schedule (either head-to-head or vs. cpu), keep all of the stats. We had a blast. In fact, my friend still has the old notebooks with our stats, records, etc. We never complained about Bo Jackson rushing for too many yards every game. We never complained about L.T. racking up too many sacks. We enjoyed it for what it was...a game. We used to discuss how awesome it would be if we could put ourselves in the game or have stats kept for us.

Now we have games that keep stats, allow us to make ourselves and friends, a.i. that at least attempts to adjust to play calling, record multi-year franchises, and more.

To be honest, I love sim football. But, if games were 100% accurate sims, my Vikings would ALWAYS choke in the playoffs, and the Browns would never make the playoffs to begin with. I'm glad I have some control over that.

Even with their flaws, these games are a huge improvement from the good ol' days. It makes you wonder what the future will hold. Someday Madden 2020 will come with a body suit that allows us to be imported into the game. We'll need to run in place, make moves, jump for catches, maybe even earn a paycheck depending on how well we play in online leagues, etc. Some people will still be upset because although their likeness was in the game, the technology did not allow for them to actually sustain a real concussion when they were blindsided by a blitzing CB.

That's just my two-cents. Did anyone else used to keep stats, make leagues, etc. back in the day?

I'm 29 and used to do the same thing with TEcmo and NBA Live.

Didn't keep a notebook or anything, but in college we used to draft fantasy teams in NBA Live and have season's against each other playing.

This 06 version is wonderful though. I am getting amazing games using slightly modified versions of "playmaker's" sliders.

Aw man, you're bringing back memories. My cousins and I did the exact same thing with Tecmo Bowl. When the Sega was out, we did the same thing for Madden 92' and Lakers bs Celtics. Damn that was so much fun. I am about 1/2 ashamed that I still have my notebook where I recorded the stats for my Cowboys teams during their numerous Super Bowl runs in Maden 92'. In fact, I didn't get rid of my Genesis and the game until I traded in all my old stuff towards a new PS2 in 2002. It's good to know I wasn't the only sports game junkie that took all that time to actually write things down. I am also glad I know I am not the oldest (27) lol.

But yeah, these games have come a loooong way. That's why I think some people get so mad when others complain about little things in games nowadays. Would you rather we were still playing with only NES and Sega graphics? Aren't you glad you don't have to continuasly blow on that old cartridge to get the game to load up? What about sticking an extra cartridge in your NES to keep the cartridge you were trying to play in place? Yeah, we got it good.

Hah!!! I forgot about messin' around with the cartridge to get it to work. Oh, the lengths we would go to. Did anyone play SNK Baseball Stars? That game was the first I remember that would allow us to make players and build them up. The technology in NCAA is pretty unbelievable when you compare it to the old days.

To give all of the younger gamers a break, I'm sure we complained needlessly when we were playing NES and Genesis. I wonder what our parents thought when they had just dumped $100+ on a system that took us away from doing any chores and homework only to hear us complain about the game needing to be "blown on" before it would work...

Man, I am 100% with you on this. Good to hear from another "old-timer" like myself. My brother, cousins, and myself would spend weekends doing the exact same thing and had mad fun in the process.

The games today are really incredible compared to what we had, maybe that is why we can appreciate them more. Are they perfect... no, but they keep making strides every year.

I am a mad stat guy like yourself and have true "sport-sims" for my PC for my stat fix. The console stat engine has never been up to par with the stat-games that come out for the PC. When I play the consoles, I don't really get bent out of shape if the stats are not dead on, I just play more for fun...

What type of "sport-sims" do you have for the PC? I have found that an NFL Fantasy Football league helps with my stat fix. The only problem with that is the NFL doesn't play all year round.
