What's the most important down to you?

What is the most important down to you? For me it's 1st down on offense.

I generally use that to experiment and it lets me know what I can do on downs to follow. Heck, that's my offensive strategy. I may go for the bomb on 1st down. If it's incomplete, I'll run on 2nd and try to get yards to make 3rd down shorter. Or, I may run on 1st down. If I get a good gain, I will most likely run on 2nd down too. If I get it to where it's like 2nd and 3-IN then I'll most likely throw it. It's very easy to play offense that way.

On defense, it's either 1st or 3rd. I really haven't decided yet. If you can control 1st down then you can theoretically call the shots for the remainder of the series. But on third it's really crucial because you're trying to force that punt.

So, what's the most important down to you?

2nd down for me. Because it can make or brake your drive. Because a bad play on 2nd down could create a long 3rd down or a short 3rd down play.

The one on which I score.

Seriously, I agree with Dust. Second down seems to be the keystone of any successful drive for me.

Take care,

1st down for me. If I can pick up good yards on 1st down, it opens things up on 2nd down and makes 3rd downs more manageable.

2nd & 5 means I can gamble and go deep or just go for the 1st down. If I gamble unsucessfully, 3rd & 5 is manageable. If I try to pick up just the 5 yards and don't make, I'm in 3rd and short. Getting good yards on 1st down makes me less perdictable on 2nd & 3rd.

1st down determines everything. The key to succesful offense in any level or form of football is avoiding 2nd & 3rd and long situations. If you don't, then the defense with dictate the game because they will know you have to pass.

Re: What's the most important down to you?

On 1st down situations, I typically go for a 'safe' 5-6 yard play and if I get 7-8 yards that’s all gravy. When playing against friends who like to throw bombs it's really not that effective as they end up in and 2nd/3rd and long scenarios and then punt.

So 1st down is significant however if I may add I like to manage the clock and control most of the time of possession. A slow, methodical offensive approach is my take on football. This allows me to throw that surprise deep pass for serious yardage/touchdowns.

That's exactly why 1st down is so important to me. You explained it much better than I did.

Dagnabit, I can't wait to get home from work so that I can get a game in.
