I suppose EA might use Athlon's Top 25 again, but as far as rating players goes, EA is using a different source, although the two IGN Top 25 position players articles are relatively close to Athlon's.
Athlon lists Quinn, Smith, and Brohm as their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team AA QBs. They list Bush, Peterson, Irons, Lynch, McFadden, and Slaton as their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team RBs.
I was going to compare Athlon and EA's ratings to figure out some other SEC player's ratings. Athlon has Leak (93), Russell (91), and Cox (88) as their choices for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team All-SEC Quarterbacks. EA has them rated as the top three quarterbacks in the SEC in that particular order. Athlon has Irons (93) and McFadden (92) listed as first team and Darby (91) and Little (90) as second team. EA decided to throw Broussard (91) in there when Athlon doesn't even have him on the All-SEC third team (Brown and Foster).
So apparently EA is no longer using Athlon to mold their Top 25 and player ratings. It would be interesting for others like me (see analyzation geek) to compare other publications to see where EA is getting their ratings from or if they are just using a combination of many different sources to compile their own.

With this being NCAA football's first year with the ESPN license it seems probable that the info that will be in this years ESPN The Magazine's college football preview issue will be basis for EA's numbers.
