Well first of all, know who your WR is matching up against, if its against a corner of the same speed, in man to man, most likely you won't get any separation. But if you're going against a zone, preferably Cover-Two, in most cases, you will have a guy open down field if you call the right play. A lot of the time it is calling the right play and getting lucky, unless you have a ridiculous speed advantage against the corner.

I actually have mastered the longball

There are two issues that you need to deal with that you're probably not doing.

1- You have to be eeexxxtra light on the buttons. In older versions and madden you can tap it like usual, but you have to be soft and quick on the buttons for NCAA or they will throw a bullet pass making it impossible to get the air up for even your fastest receivers to get separation.

2- You have to aim the pass over the outside shoulder of your receivers covering corner. Meaning that if the cornerback has an inside lane then you need to pass the ball to the outside and visa versa. This makes it so that the corner cant make most any more to make a play on the ball and makes the corner work against the movement of his body giving more opportunity for separation and making any animation that the corner would have to go through highly ineffective.

Also what the previous poster says is right, you have to have the speed advantage as well as a QB with 90+ throwing power

I agree with feeq14's advice. As a general philosophy, I don't use the deep ball much, either in video games, or in real football (tackle or flag). But when I do use it in NCAA, I make sure I have a wideout that is in one-on-one coverage and is faster than the guy covering him. Then I will lob the ball and lead the WR deep and let him run under it. Usually he has not gained separation yet at the time I throw the ball, but gets free by a few steps by the time the ball is there. I will almost never throw it against a CB with safety help. Those are pretty much the only guidelines I go by. I probably throw 2-3 deep balls in an average game against the CPU on All American, and I complete about 50% of them. (Whereas I complete 70% of passes overall.)
