Yep, you definitely have to miss 2 to get 1 back.

I'm not sure that's accurate. I know of a few guys that missed one season and got a full season back... I think Tony Yelk (former Iowa State Cyclone) was one of those guys

I think the "official" rule is you can't participate in more than 20% of the season, and none of your participation can be in the second half of the season. But I think that they may not grant it to you always if you just meet the minimum.

Maybe they've changed the rule then recently. I've known of players turned down because their injury in one of their two missed seasons wasn't significant enough or the doctor didn't describe the injury properly in their paperwork (Milton Wynn).

I know the 20% rule technically applies within the first 5 games, not necessarily the first half of the season.

Re: Medical Redshirts and Discipline on next-gen...

To receive a medical hardship waiver - in any sport - the injury must limit the student-athlete’s participation to no more than 20 percent of the team’s contests (rounded to the next whole number), with all participation occurring in the first half of the season.
Therefore, for a football player, the maximum number of games that he can play in and still receive a medical hardship waiver is three (20 percent of 11 equals 2.2, which is rounded up to 3), and none of his time on the field can occur after the fifth game (the sixth game of an eleven game season is considered in the second half of the season).

I am not that big on player discipline, but would love to see the medical redshirts added in this year.
