It is high/low specific. I use it all the time, most of the time I use it low and my guy takes out the ball carrier's legs.

Well its almost pointless to use X or square. If your not laying a lick on em, they're breaking the tackle.

Turn break tackles up and watch how quick you will stop using Hit Stick

Also... down on right thumb stick is for a low tackle and up is for high... I've found out that if you are using a defensive player who is OBVIOUSLY bigger then the ball carrier you will automatically mow him over from the top wether you push up or down. Try using a DB to Hit Stick a TE in the flats.. try pushing up on the thumbstick and see how much you fail... now get in the same situation again and hit down... you will notice the difference... trust me...
