Should Y-Trips = Illegal formation Penalty?????

The reason that I ask is because the tackle isn't allowed to be the last man on the line of scrimmage (so I was told while playing high school & college ball). He has to be "covered up" by an eligible receiver. On the game, in the I Y-Trips, Strong Y-trips, & Weak Y-trips, the tackle is the last man on the line. According to NCAA & NFL rules, wouldn't that be a penalty every time a team ran a play from those formations? The formations have been in both ncaa & madden for years and it irks me to no end.

So I ask, am I getting annoyed for no reason or is this really another "oversight" on EA's part?

It's an unbalanced line. The Tackle is actually eligible. In the NFL you are required to check in with the ref if you have a player with an ineligible receiver number lining up in an eligible position. The Chargers for instance run an unbalanced line fairly frequently. I Am not totally sure of the rule in the college game as far as checking in with the refs. But the formation is technically legal.

No, as long as there is 1 man on the line of scrimmage it is legal, in the trips formations you'll notice one of the men closer to the line of scrimmage than the other two.

if the "Y" or TE goes out on a pass then that is an illegal man downfield. And as BK said not sure about tackle's being ok the check in or not.

The tackle can't go out for a pass in college football. There are rules about the numbers that eligible receivers are allowed to wear in college. Players with lineman numbers aren't allowed to go out for passes, regardless of where they line up.

It's a completely legal formation, but only the HB, FB, and both WRs can go out for a pass.

Re: Should Y-Trips = Illegal formation Penalty?????

The rule is that there must be 7 men on the line of scrimmage, and the two outermost players are eligible.

So, if you run double tight to one side and both are on the line of scrimmage, this makes the left tackle and the right tight end the eligible receivers. If the inside tight end goes out for a pass, they are considered the ineligible receiver down field.

So no, it's not an illegal formation. As long as there are 7 men on the line of scrimmage--- no more, no less--- it's legal. The issue is who is the eligible receiver, not the formation.

S ..... T G C G T E

S= Split end
T= Tackle
G=Guard
C=Center
E= Tight End
Bold= Eligible receiver

Above is the basic "pro" line formation... the tight end and the split end are eligible... looking at a double tight end set...

T G C G T E E

Legal formation... 7 men on the line... but the tackle and outside tight end are now eligible receivers, and the inside tight end is not. If the inside tight end released and the tackle stayed in, the inside tight end would be called for a penalty. If the Tackle released and the inside tight end stayed in (presuming the tackle either has an eligible number or has checked in as eligible), there is no penalty.

Re: Should Y-Trips = Illegal formation Penalty?????

but typically in an unbalanced line formation, don't the TE and strong tackle usually just switch positions?
