Re: DL recruiting for a 3-4

I run mainly a 3 man front defense in my Dynasty. I posted this in another topic a few days back. But, when I'm recruiting I look for these ratings for my recruits.

Defensive End
Balanced 4-3 DE : Decent Speed, Power, and Finesse Moves
4-3 Run Stopper : Strength, Block Shedding and Tackling
3-4 Run Stopper : Strength, Pursuit, and Tackiling
3-4 Versatile : Decent Physical and Intangible Ratings
Speed Rusher : Speed Acceleration and pass Rushing

Defensive Tackle
Pass Rusher DT : Acceleration and Pass Rushing
Prototype DT : Agility, Strength, and Acceleration
Nose Tackle DT : Strength and Tackling
Run Stopper DT : Strength, Block Shedding, and Tackling
Balanced DT : Decent Physical and Intangible Ratings

Inside/Outside Linebacker
3-4 Tackler LB : Block Shedding, Pursuit, and Tackling
3-4 Pass Rusher LB : Acceleration and Pass Rushing
Cover 2 LB : Zone Coverage, and Decent Speed and Agility
Run Stopper LB : Block Shedding, Pursuit and Tackling
Prototype LB : Speed, Agility, and Acceleration
Balanced LB : Decent Speed, Acceleration and Agility

I alos will then go back to those recruits that I sign, and I edit them to the size of a 3 man front guy. I do the same with my LB's as well. All my linemen are runstoppers. My LB's I go Balanced for MLB's, Pass Defense for my Strong side then pass rusher for my weak side.

That's exactly what I was going to post lol. They give a good run down in Madden for the different player schemes.

Personally, I would go for run stoppers across the defensive line. MLB's I want to be able to roam, shed blocks, and pursue. OLB's I usually go for pure pass rushers, or someone who is decent at block shedding but can still cover the flats.

Re: DL recruiting for a 3-4

I run a 3-4 as well but mine is along the lines of what Wade Phillips of the Texans does. Which is a one gap system as apposed to the traditional two gap system. So I look for balanced DE or pass rushing DT I can change to DE and a run stuffing DT for my defensive line. Pass rushing DEs or coverage LB and balanced MLB or run stuffing OLB for my linebacking core. And all coverage guys for the secondary. Wade likes to blitz alot leaving a lot of man to man coverage so I need CBs and safeties with speed.

Re: DL recruiting for a 3-4

the problem i have with the 3-4 in this game is there is always a olb matched up on the slot wr. this makes the ideal OLB/DE type like elvis dumervil into a slow safety that cant keep up. Theres not enough plays that blitz properly from the base 3-4 package.

that being said, I do enjoy the recruiting as i try to find the perfect 6'3 230 OLB types and 6'4 270 DE types amongst the big list of more traditional sized guys. the only difference from real life is i let me OLBs be more pass defense types instead of pass rush types. then i let the mlbs be the strength run stopper types

I could use some feedback on how to recruit that position in this game, thanks.

Re: DL recruiting for a 3-4

Going as far as height/weight edits is a little much IMO, but thats just my opinion. In fact its kind of like cheat/cheezing

DE: I like to go for guys that are at least 6'3 and 270+. You can convert undersized DT and get good results, just do it early bc of the loss to awareness. Strength is the key here, speed doesn't matter.

DT: 300+ only and high strength 85+ is a requirement. I really like em 320+

OLB: 6'3+ 240+ ACC, BlckShed, Pursuit are key. Spd anything over 79 is good and prefer to have decent zone covg

MLB: 240+ Need to be all around beasts. Spd, ACC, Pur, Tck, MCV, ZCV they need to be able to do it all

CB: Spd, MCV, Press, AWR

Building a proper 3-4 defense can take years in this game but its fun when you do. Sure you can have success early with smaller guys but you are def going to give up more yards.

I tend to run a hybrid D early on, using 3-4 in certain situations until I can get the personnel to run it as my base. Its good to have the hybrid formations though bc trying to run a 3-4 base against a hurry up spread offense is just asking for trouble.
