I'd go with a city over a direction, even though Nor Cal sounds pretty sweet. Nor Cal Blue Fins. Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach, Myrtle Beach...You could start as the Nor Cal Blue Fins, small school and cement a rivalry with USC. Or you could be say Myrtle Beach and get a triangle rivalry going with South Carolina and Clemson

First of all, do you have a city in mind? You could look up the history of the city and I'm sure you'd find some cool facts. I like that logo but I do agree it looks like a Water Sport company more than a FBall team, really cool though. I'd try doing your Helmet logo first.
