Are you certain that you set the resolution of your game console to 1080p?
Yes I have tried it several times with only '1080p' selected and it looks bad compared to when I select '1080i'. And yes I connect it with HDMI to my PS3.

When you say you select 1080p are you selecting it from within the TV settings or from within the PS3 settings?

Has your PS3 ever been connected to another 1080 HDTV and if so did it work OK? Has your TV ever been connected to another 1080 source (like blu-ray, Xbox) and if so did it work OK?

Maybe you have a friend with a 1080p TV you could test this out on? Or a friend who has an Xbox and/or PS3 that they could try out on your TV. Have you tried playing a Blu-ray movie? Is it also better on 1080i than on 1080p? Experimenting like this would help you diagnose the problem.
