What is the SIM style of football?

Please don't call me a noob. I literally thought sim meant simulation, like you guys simmed the games. Apparently this is not the case. Can someone elaborate for me?

Re: What is the SIM style of football?

Play like how you see it on TV basically. Don't run the same cheesy play 5 times in a row just to do anything to win.

This is our leagues rules:

Powerhouse Rules and Regulations

1) Play sim football. This is a sim-style OD and as such, expect the game play to reflect that of real life football. Using tactics which abuse or exploit the programming in the game are not permitted. Examples include dropping back to pass beyond ~10 yards, calling pass plays with the sole purpose of running with the quarterback or manipulating defenders alignments to confuse blocking and create a nano blitz. If you have any questions about what is and is not sim football, ask.

2) 4th Down Attempts

Because the game is so significantly swayed towards offensive football, we have to restrict the number and type of 4th downs users can attempt. In an effort to simplify that rule, one of the following situations must exist to attempt a 4th down:

- Ball is on or beyond opponents (+)40 and it is 4th & 3 or less
- If trailing in the 4th
- If trailing by 21+ points
- End of the Half Hail Mary

3) Chew Clock is NOT permitted at any time.

4) Run commit is NOT permitted at any time.

5) Hurry-up, no-huddle offenses are permitted at all times while the clock is running. If the clock stops for an incomplete pass or a play out of bounds in the last two minutes of each half, you are required to return to the huddle.

6) Fake punts and fake field goals are NOT permitted at any time, including extra points.

7) Do not use flat angle, cross field punts in an attempt to induce a muff or exploit the loose ball logic in the game.

8) Users are restricted to TWO manual movements of defensive players and one of those players must be the defender the user controls at the snap of the ball. This rule also applies to defensive special teams plays.

9) All defensive shifts are permitted; however, users may NOT manually move defensive linemen from their initial alignment until after the snap. That includes lateral or vertical movement.

10) A minimum of two players must rush the passer on every play, regardless of the game situation. Hot routing 10 or 11 players into coverage is NOT permitted at any time.

11) Ineligible Man Down Field. Due to the lack of an ineligible man down field penalty in the game, users are NOT permitted to throw a pass beyond the line of scrimmage when a slip screen or mid screen is called. Any pass thrown when these plays are called must be completed at or behind the line of scrimmage. This rule does not apply to any other screen types. If the screen is covered, you are permitted to scramble or throw the ball away.

12) Bubble Screen/OPI. If an errant throw leads to an offensive pass interference penalty on a bubble screen, the defensive user is REQUIRED to decline the penalty. This requirement is lifted if the offensive user intentionally throws to any receiver except the intended receiver.

13) Scoring cap is 70 points unless the CPU is within 14 points. Every effort should be made to play backups in a blowout. Users found to be running up individual statistics for post-season awards will receive one warning, followed by an immediate suspension of that player for the following game.

Offseason/Recruiting

1) You may not persuade anyone from declaring for the draft if the following apply:

- 90 overall or higher (if projected to go in the first four rounds). Any player projected to go in the first round are to be let go regardless of rating.
- Heisman Trophy winner

2) Scholarship limit is Seniors +2

3) Minimum weights for off-season position changes:

DT: 250 lbs
DE: 215 lbs
LB: 200 lbs
TE: 225 lbs
ATH: Can be assigned anywhere they are rated 60 overall or higher

Players may only be moved one position group down during position changes (DBs can move to LB, LB to DE and DE to DT but LBs cannot move to DT, etc). Players may be moved up as many groups as you want (DTs can move to LB, DE to S, etc).

Advance Schedule

The advance schedule will be posted in the weekly advance thread, but 48 hours per game week is the standard. Extensions are granted on request.

Coaching Tree

There are 4 categories in the coaching tree, 2 for the HC and 1 each for your assistants. The only part of the tree you can use is recruiting - no game management, no offensive or defensive coordinator.

Recruiting - 15 max
Game Management - none
Offensive Coordinator - none
Defensive Coordinator - none

Enforcement

As always, it is up to each individual user to enforce the rules and encourage others to do the same. The commissioner will only step in and enforce or sanction players if individual users cannot come to an agreement. Should a dispute arise, handle it professionally.

Short answer... It's what some people on the forums crap on about to try and convince themselves that they aren't just playing a video game... Play however you want, as long as you enjoy it. That's the whole point, right?

Right, so it's really up to how you want to play - but if he was just curious what we "crap on" about, then he got his answer from a couple posts above.

Fwiw, I agree with all those rules by NavyHog - that's exactly how I play offline. Kind of funny considering I hadn't seen the rules before reading that post.

Re: What is the SIM style of football?

In case you wanted another wall of text for an example of how other ODs might try to accomplish a more sim style of play, here you go. Again, it is up to the commish to enforce the rules or up to the player to play however they enjoy the game for offline games. If you want to run HB Dive every play and you enjoy it then do it.

EliteReboot League Rule Book

Advance schedule is Thursday night and Sunday night. Will extend out to a full week if needed for user/user games.

SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS POSSIBLE EXPLOITS GET FOUND OUT. Please report things you see to me.

1 RESTART PER SEASON

1. Use PMs, use emails, use XBOX LIVE, but most importantly...
use CELL PHONE NUMBERS to text your opponents when you need to.
Get game dates and times set up as early as possible.

2. Headsets
a. Both players should use a WORKING headset and Mic, No headset...you must contact your opponent prior to start and use text messaging. You DON'T need to talk THROUGHOUT the game. But you MUST say "Hello" at game start screen.
b. You must be able to pause the game and put your headset on and be able to TALK if you or your opponent wants to speak with you.

PLAYBOOKS

3. Playbooks
a. You may choose any playbook to begin your season. This includes offense and defense. Playbooks must be declared and NO switching during the season. NO custom playbooks.
b. You can switch playbooks if you want after a season concludes. Again, you must post your new playbook.

OFFENSE

Rule 4. Total Points Scored by You
a. We have a total points per game scoring cap. You can NOT go over 56 points or 14 more points than your opponent in a game whichever is greater. No exceptions.
b. If you go over the allowed points, your game will get reset and simmed that week when I advance the league. Possible injuries apply.

Rule 5. Up by 28 points or more Rule
a. If you get the ball, and you are leading by 28+ or more points in the SECOND half, you MUST run on ALL downs, EVERY play. This is a respect thing when playing human opponents.
b. Once the game gets to 27 points or less you can throw again.

Rule 6. Max Catches per Game by your RBs
a. Max Catches for all RB's (HBs and FBs), per game is 9 TOTAL. Do NOT allow your RBs to catch more than 9 passes per game.
b. This includes all RBs and all types of catches; screens and down-field RB catches.

Rule 7. Screen Passes
a. Please do not abuse RB and WR screens. All of them are legal. But please do not excessively do this. Especially in a pattern...for example...you always seem to screen to the HB on third and 5....or you call screens over and over and over again. Same play over and over throughout a game. Please don't do this.
b. NOTE: Screens to the RBs are limited by number of RB catch rule.

Rule 8. Men set in Motion
a. On O, A man that is sent in motion MANUALLY may not be thrown to. If you move a man in motion manually, he can ONLY block on that play or be a decoy after he comes to a set stopped position.
b. We are not talking about the AI GREEN Line Man in Motion in the play call screens. Those players can move and you cannot snap the ball while they are moving but you can throw to them. We are talking about manual man in motion here.
c. If it is a RUN play the manual man in motion MUST come to a complete stop and set before you hike the ball. Again, we are not talking about the GREEN LINE man in motion plays.
d. You cannot snap the ball on running or passing plays with the GREEN Line players still moving in motion.
e. Note to the defensive coach: It is easy to tell if a player is manually being motioned = if he is manually being motioned he will have a blue or orange circle under him. If you don't see a blue or orange circle under the player moving that means the CPU is moving that player and it is legal.
f. Manually moving HBs or FBs out of the pocket to a slot WR or TE or wide WR position is not allowed. If it happens by a GREEN line in the play call screen you can throw to him.
g. Yes, you can manually move your HB or FB in the backfield from one side to the other to help with blocking, (slanted I formation) but you can not shift them to outside receiver slots.
h. you need to snap the ball MOST times with 10 seconds on the play clock. Going under every once in a while is OK. But that should not be happening over and over. If you keep going under 10 seconds, you HAVE TO stop with the audibles and adjustments and hike the ball at 10

Rule 9. QB Scrambling
a. A quarterback may not drop back on a pass play no further than 10 yards back behind the LOS; without being under heavy direct pass rush by an oncoming D player. Your QB must stay within 10 yards of the LOS in the pocket on a normal pass play. QB Runs out of the pocket or past the LOS are limited by other league rules. (see league list). I don't want to get tick tacky about the 10 yards here. Use your heads. It is easy to see if a gamer is exploiting the drop back or if he is just dropping back manually or moving his QB in a "normal" realistic way.
b. A QB scrambling manually to the sideline/passing outside the hash-marks to the far right or left: Please do not exploit this. I do not want to write a specific rule about this. Just please keep it to a minimum. Its cheesy.
c. The BLUE LINE QB roll outs are not as cheesy....still, lets keep all QB roll outs to a minimum OK? Do not abuse these plays. Realistic moving around with the QB is cool. We are all aware of what unrealistic rolling out or dropping back looks like. Don't do that!
d. we do not limit the number of QB rushing attempts per game.
e. We DO limit the number of QB rushing yards per game to 150 yards max. That's 150 yards per QB. If you go over that, you CAN NOT run past the LOS with that QB for the balance of that game. No exceptions.

Rule 10. HUT HUT HUT
a. A team may only use quarterback cadence Hut Hut to obtain a penalty twice in a game. (ANY 2 cadence penalties called against the defense is the limit).
b. After you get 2 encroachment or offsides penalties on the D you have to STOP doing the bumper press to try and get the D to jump offsides. You can no longer do it in that game.

Rule 11. The QB Pump Fake
The pump fake is allowed, but PLEASE do not abuse this!
Use it occasionally if you want? Maybe a couple of times per half max? More than that and I say, knock it off. Thanks

Rule 12. Play Action
PA Play Action pass plays are allowed. Just please do not exploit this. do not overuse this "feature". Calling a PA play action pass play on 3rd and 15 for example is cheese. PA play action is a play (play action) that is designed to fool the D when they may be expecting a RUN PLAY.
If you are in a situation where the Defense would NEVER be anticipating a RUN PLAY (like 3rd and 10+) then you calling a PA pass play is cheese! Do not do that. I see too many coaches in our league using play action on 3rd and long....STOP IT

Rule 13. QB Sneak plays
You can ONLY use the playbook short yardage QB sneak plays on "BLANK" and INCHES.... (2nd and inches. 3rd and inches. 4th and inches.)
ANY OTHER SITUATION the play is banned.
We are not talking about running out of the shotgun with the QB, we are talking about Goalline formation sneak

Rule 14. Upback I formation running
a. You can ONLY run the "up running back in any one of the various I formations" on 1st and or 2nd downs. We are talking about where the FB typically lines up behind the QB in the I formation or in a slanted I formation.
b. You can NOT run these upback running plays in any variation of the I formation on 3rd or 4th downs ever. There are known short yardage running exploits. We have BANNED running these plays on 3rd and or 4th downs altogether. Not worth the possible headaches.
c. You can run a FB in short yardage, but you will need to sub him in as the deeper tailback in any formation to do so

Rule 15. NO HUDDLE
a: No huddle can be used by anyone when dictated by circumstances. Late in either half or trailing in the 4th qtr. For sportsmanship, please announce on the mics when you plan on running No Huddle

Rule 16. User Catching
a: User catching is allowed in Elite League. If it becomes overpowered, it will be banned.

Rule 17. "IT'S 4th DOWN, CAN I GO FOR IT?"
a. A team may NOT go for it on 4th down when they are winning at ANY time in the game. The defense has stopped you and you must kick.
b. A team may NOT go for it anytime in the 1st 3 quarters.
c. If tied in the 4th quarter, you are allowed to go for it when it is 4th & 2 or less, but only when in opponents territory.
d. If losing in the 4th quarter, you may go for it no matter the distance to gain, no matter where you are on the field.
e. You must announce on the mic that you are going for it.

Rule 18. Gadget and Trick Plays
a. All gadget plays are limited to a max of once per half. Plays like the flea flicker, RB throwing the ball option play, Hail Marys, etc. That's one specific try per half, not one successful try per half. I am not going to totally define what is a gadget play. If something is unusual play wise and seems to be working extremely well, you may have found a game exploit. Lets keep these plays to a minimum.
b. Pitch plays where the QB has the option of running or pitching to a RB is not a gadget play in college football.

Rule 19. Clock Management
a. The O Play Clock can not be PURPOSELY be run down in order to run out or "milk" the Game Clock for a given Quarter until after the 2 minute mark on the clock in the 2nd and or 4th Quarter(s).
b. Please don't play the "milk the clock game" excessively in this league outside of the end of the half's? Its cheesy. You should try and snap the ball with a minimum of ten seconds on the clock all game long at all times on O. If you are not doing this, CHANGE the way you play on O so you can not do that.
c. You must run your offense in a way that you are snapping the ball at 10 or more seconds on the play clock at all times. Going under every once in a while is OK. But you should not consistently be doing this for ANY reason. Stop it and adjust so you can snap at 10 seconds or greater. Thanks.

20. Stat max per game unless in a shootout.
Passing stats- Max of 5 TDs and 500 yards per game
Rushing stats- Max of 4 TDs and 300 yards per game
Receiving stats- Max of 4 TDs and 250 yards per game
QB rushing stats- Max of 4 TDs and 150 yards per game
Sacks- Max of 4 sacks per player

21. Disconnects
In user vs user games, if there is a disconnect of any kind and is still in the 1st half, the game should be replayed. If a disconnect happens in the 2nd half, both players should try and come to an agreement on whether to replay the game or not. If an agreement can not be met, the user who still has a connection can decide to finish the game if he chooses.

22.You may control ANY player pre-snap. NO MANUAL PRESNAP MOVEMENT IS ALLOWED, ONLY GROUP SHIFTING IS PERMITTED.

23. On-Side Kicks and Squib kicks
a. On-Side Kicks are not allowed at all in the first half of play EVER.
b. On-Side Kicks can be done in the 2nd half if you are behind by 21 points or more.
c. On-Side Kicks can be done at any time in the 4th quarter if you are losing.
If you do this you have to announce it over the Mic. You can never "surprise" onside.
d. All kick offs can be kicked to the corners on purpose.
e. You CAN kick out of bounds on purpose.
f. You can have multiple KO return TDs in the same game by the same player.
g. You cannot manually move a blocker before receiving the kick. You must only control the kick returner.

24. Fake Kicking
fake kick or fake punt are never allowed.

25. Catching and Returning a Missed FG
Returning missed FG's is NOT banned.

26. A team may go for a 2 point conversion when behind in the 2nd half.
b.You MUST announce on Mic in game that you are going or kicking BEFORE you come out on the field in a formation.
