FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE FOOTBALL GAME?

Just a thought:

Why couldn't a company make a game with generic teams however make it fully customizable.

Teams could be created via a "teambuilder" and have the "dynasty" to be customized such as playoffs/bowls, number of teams/conferences, import conference logos, bowl game logos, ect...

Now tell me why I am wrong?

Re: FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE FOOTBALL GAME?

A company can make a game exactly like that, but would it be a game you would want to play?

Outside of the games produced by EA Sports, recent football games have been forgettable. Why? Because the smaller companies that produce them lack resources. So why wouldn't a bigger company such as EA do this? They have the resources but unfortunately, licenses are what sell a game to the masses. It's a messed-up Catch 22.

As much as I wish they would, I don't believe that EA would ever release College Football 2018 with a bunch of generic teams and a robust editor. But if they snagged the proper licenses and made the game super-customizable, then we might have something. Or some smaller company comes along and works a miracle, it could happen.

Re: FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE FOOTBALL GAME?

This "bright idea" has been brought up countless times since the demise of EA NCAA Football. And my response is simple: the sales would be weak. Sure, people here and in various other communities would buy the game, but to the casual gamer looking for some college football, it wouldn't appeal to them. They want the real teams, stadiums, uniforms, conferences, and they want it now. No big company would see it feasible to create an unlicensed college football game and no company wanting to create this game would have the resources to do it well.

IMV Gaming wants to do exactly that. But it won't sell, not like an EA, 2k etc. game would. And even if a huge company made it, it wouldn't sell that well.

Re: FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE FOOTBALL GAME?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this whole thing happen because the individual players weren't being compensated for their likeness? I haven't followed all of the discussions about this over the years, so pardon me if this has been asked before. But couldn't the game be released without any players' likeness but still have the real teams and similar ratings, but with non-customizable fictional players? I know it wouldn't be the best, but it's a workaround for those of us who don't really care about the individual but rather the game of college football itself.

Re: FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE FOOTBALL GAME?

Because it could still be seen as a way for video game companies to avoid paying for team/school licenses or paying players for their likeness.

The O'Bannon case specifically addressed this issue. When EA raised the defense that the NCAA Football games were being produced without the real life player names, the court struck that down, basically saying that EA couldn't simply pass the blame to consumers while still giving consumers the tools to edit the rosters in-game.
