My impressions after a couple of hours. Forgive me for listing anything that already existed in last year's next gen version since I play on PC so didn't have the next gen engine last year:
+ I love the new free/corner kick system. Much more realistic than the old post-kick stick manipulation system.
= That said, I'm not sure about the new penalty kick system because I'm not sure exactly how it works, because they didn't include any sort of in-game tutorial, unlike most other things.
+ Looks really good, but...
- Poor optimization on PC.
+ Gameplay is so much better on the next gen engine. I'm kind of glad I didn't know what I was missing last year.
+ There's a referee strictness setting! I'm seeing fouls!
-? Turning the gameplay to slow seems to still have the defender strafing problem, but I'm putting a question mark because I'm not 100% sure.
+ Lots of new training scenarios, and some of them are pretty fun.
+ Glad we can finally play as some real-life managers.
- Still max 7 bench players. How has this still not been changed?
+ A lot of good animations, and despite them focusing on it very little in the run-up to release, a lot of them make defending better. I've already pulled off some really nice tackles that don't seem to have been possible before.
+ Some nice new presentations.
+ Heading, particularly on defence, feels a lot better this year.
+ No more separate game launcher that I had to re-disable via a command line after every patch in previous years.
So far I'm impressed, but I'm approaching it cautiously because I've been fooled in the early days before.
Re: FIFA 23 Trial Available Today For EA Play Subscribers
On the next gen beta I had to play on normal speed, every time I played on slow it caused issues with defensive players. Although normal didn’t seem that fast like previous versions.
Also this was Xbox but same engine as pc this year.

Got in no problem the first time. After that my series x wouldn't get into the trial. Said there were authentication issues. Saw xbox tweet something about it but hopefully it gets fixed soon.
I'm glad I opted to play in a pre-season cup because I spent those matches shedding habits developed over the last couple of years defensively, like switching constantly to get guys into position. Now it feels more like PES (RIP) where I can just play on-ball defence and trust that the other guys will be in the right positions.

So when I read they were adding women’s leagues, I thought that meant you could actually play the league in a career mode. I’m not seeing that option anywhere so I’m assuming my thinking was wrong? Is there a way I can at least do a season with them?

-Midfield back to 21 where they have no intention of getting back to defend.
-Defenders running into random positions to leave space for attackers.
-Opposition just breezing past my players.
-That ridiculous camera zoom on a power shot is gimmicky and should be able to be switched off.
-Hypermotion 2 has only made player positioning and reactions more unrealistic to my eyes.
-Graphics look worse (PS5).
I’ll have a play with sliders etc but I can honestly say I’ve never been so put off by a fifa on a first play before. It’s horrendous. Thank god for the EA play trial!

Holy cow is this the truth. I was playing the game like I'm used to, and it was causing problems. The first two games really helped me.

You can, it's in the settings.

Completely disagree. I've never seen a more organic game of FIFA played. The pitch looks fantastic and I love it (on Xbox Series S).

I immediately started with Matt's FIFA 22 slider settings and I'm instantly happy. Thus far, this has been a fantastic experience. I've had my slower defenders exploited by the AI, my skilled players are able to make an impact, and the games I've played have been solid. Jockeying feels good, I am pleased.
My 2nd friendly, AI completely took out Diego Rubio's legs in what was a vicious tackle. Totally missed the ball. The crowd went bonkers immediately for it and the ref pulled the red card. I have penalties turned to "strict."

Where can I find the pre-season cup? How exactly did you shed habits?
I played a Croatia vs Norway game on Professional and it ended 9-6. It was fun but yikes! I will bump it up to World Class but also need to work on defending so I would be pleased to learn ways to practice this.
Re: FIFA 23 Trial Available Today For EA Play Subscribers
Played a handful of Kickoff games and liked how it felt. Honeymoon phase still obviously, but it just felt like players had more weight and didn't get stuck in predictable, canned animations every time they got bumped like in '22. Controls feel more responsive. Colors seemed to pop more. I am getting destroyed on World Class by the AI though.
The new Power shot is weird. Takes forever to get off and hard to control (I put a handful into the corner flag already). I'm ok with the trade offs, but I'm not sure how that is going to be particularly useful in its current state. Probably need more time to test.
Still getting used to the corner/free kick mechanics, but scored this beauty with Tonali last night.
