Question about Offsides

So I'm fairly new to being a follower of soccer and I'm familiar with offsides is, however, in one of the games I played earlier today a situation occurred which I didn't think would be called offsides, but was. Here's what happened...

So I send the ball into the box on a cross (onside) and my striker send a lazer towards the goal. It deflects off the right post to another forward who buries it in the back of the net. The flag goes up on my forward because he was offsides when the shot was taken and it bounced off the post directly to him. Goal not allowed.

Should this have really been offsides?

Yes. The shot counts as a new pass.
