I'm in just the 36th minute of a game right now in career mode and theres been 5 yellow cards and 2 red cards. it seems every time contact happens someone gets booked. is this because of the referee?

also I got a red card last game but it was a friendly. my player didn't miss next match. was this because it was a friendly?

Cards generally get taken out when slide tackles miss the ball and only hit the man. Try pressing B/circle to do a standing tackle.

different refs do have different levels of strictness.

fouling from behind is still a foul even if you get the ball and man.

cards in different competitions do not cross over. getting a yellow in league play does not effect friendlies, local cup play, continental cup play(Champions or Europa League) or international play.

Some refs give a lot of cards and I feel like some wouldn't even if you punched somebody while on the field. And red cards in friendlies don't effect anything.

Some referees are very strict and some are very friendly.
So I think it depends on your luck.

Also, in a game where there are lots of fouls, the ref will start to go card crazy. He'll start with an animation where he starts pointing before handing out a card.
