Career mode: End of season free agents

Can someone please tell me what happens in Career mode (Manager) when a players contract expires at the end of the season. I was waiting for some players to become free agents but the season has finished and it looks like they have all stayed on their current teams. Do they automatically resign?

Yes. They either re-sign or another team scoops them up. FYI You can sign any player 23 years or older with 6 months left to a pre-contract and not have to pay a transfer fee. You could have signed them anytime between January 1st and June 30th and as soon as the summer transfer window opened up they would have joined your team.

Thank you so much for your reply. I’m gutted I waited too long and thought that they would have joined the free agent pool. Missed my chance! Damn...So no players ever hit the free agent pool? Only if you cut them?

Good players rarely become free agents as far as I can tell. Not saying you can't find some good talent there but the big names don't/won't show up there. The free agent rush you get in other sports doesn't really happen since you can sign them to pre-contracts.
