Resigning Players Out On Loan

Completed my first season as a manager and I had two players out on loan and they were also in their last season of their contract. At the end of the season I was warned that I would lose them if I didn't resign them, but I was unable to resign them while on loan (option not given in Squad Hub screen). They didn't return to my side until July when the loan expired but by then their contract did too. I understand they are Free Agents now, but in years past I remember the loans expiring in time for us to sign them to a new contact. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I'd just recall them early and give them a new contract.

True, but I don't believe you had to do that in the past and it will cost you $.

You're right. The devs care so little about Career Mode that I just assume no bugs will ever get fixed and I'm used to having to figure out workarounds.
