What am I doing wrong in online VS

Up until this point, I have only used the EASHL and drop in online options, but recently wanted to try some of the VS games. I will easily outshoot my opponents by twice as many shots, but will often come away with only 1 or 0 goals, and I will get beat because of a couple of pretty weak slapshots, or dumb things like my D man kicking in a puck.

Also, most of the people I play simply go for the check, and I easily go around them and get a nice shot. 2 on 1's 3 on 1's, breakaways are all common, but it seems that their goalie always comes up with the save. I can pass to a guy with a wide open net, and somehow their goaltender will get it. It gets super frustrating to outshoot opponents 45-25 or something like that, and come away with 0 or 1 goal that game and lose.

Is VS basically land of the cheesers and there is no point in a sim guy playing, or am I just missing something. I am certainly getting the chances, but it just seems that I can't score.

Use dekes before shooting.

Clean looks from plain wrist shots just don't go in like they should.

I second this, practice your dekes in shootout/practice mode for a while but you really need to be able to convert breakaways when you get them and dekes are essential to that. I don't mean the fancy deke move and I don't even know what button combo it is, I just mean some fancy right stick left/right action before shooting. If you have time, you should always use the right stick either left or right before shooting a wrist shot. I am actually fairly pleased with the last tuner set, I get a decent variety of one-timer, slap shot and deke shooting goals.
As to your question about online players, I think there are both sim and non-sim ones. The ones that bug me the most are idiots who dive everywhere, especially in the offensive zone and the constant stick-lifting that I think is much more effective than it should be. Despite my issues with passing and other problems with this game, I have probably already played NHL 11 more than either of the past two year's versions and still enjoy it, and I play exclusively online versus due to EA's refusal to build a multiplayer franchise mode. I don't understand how EA's level/rank system works, but it seems to work fairly well for matchmaking as I used to win almost all of my games but now get good challenges almost every game.

Thanks for the advice. I just rolled off 4 wins, with three of them shutouts. Scoring a ton of goals now, at least 3 a game, but usually more like 5 or 6. Now the problem I have are people quitting! Oh well, my "rank" should match me up with better people eventually.

I hate people who skate around in circles instead of passing and spam the stick lift/poke check all game long.

There should be way more penalties from all the hacking and slashing that people get away with in this game.

Also, on penalty shots, the stupid goalie lunging dive is way too effective. Only way to counter it is to skate in real slow, and that's just dumb.
