I am in offline BeaGm on all star with sliders. Apparently I need better sliders because it seems like everytime I am winning going into the 3rd, during the 3rd the CPU is unstoppable. They literally scored 3 goals in 5 mins prompting me to slam my controller in frustration. Last night I was winning 2-1 and the CPU shot it, my goalie saved it but for some reason decided to put the puck back in play without me hitting anything and it went right to the CPU players and he scored. Is it just me, or is this just the classic EA rubberbanding I read so much about?

welcome to the club. Set your strategies to defend, defend and pray that some glitchy funny bounce doesn't occur.I am in offline BeaGm on all star with sliders. Re: swear this game cheats
Start adjusting your strats in the 3rd. Usually that's where the CPU goes more aggresive when trailing on the scoreboard.
If you're running collapsing, you might want to change it to Tight Point if the CPU starts shooting with D's. The opposite is true if they start crashing the net more.
The CPU does NOT cheat, they only adjust their strategy to something else and you can't seem to adapt yours.Comment

Re: swear this game cheats
And that's one of the issues. The momentum is not done properly in this game. Also, the pin point passing by the CPU can also make it feel like they are "cheating". Pin point passing equals goals.
There is no "human error" programmed into the CPU, so you will never get an organic feel to the game. If the CPU sees a player in the slot, there is a 99% chance he will connect with that player on a pass, which creates a shot attempt and again, the accuracy with shooting. Regardless how many defensemen are standing there. (the 1% being you stealing the puck)
I understand NHL teams getting that "momentum" and scoring goals. But it does NOT happen every time in the "real" NHL like it does in this game. My Hawks got their butts handed to them by Edmonton the other night. Did you see the Hawks come back and score a bunch in the 3rd? No. They had no energy, etc. It does not happen all the time.
Were there missed passes? Yes. Were there missed shots? Yes.
I do agree that there doesn't seem to be "cheating" in this game, but the uncanny ability of the CPU to pass and shoot with an alarming accuracy, is what gives that impression. The gameplay is arcade, not sim.Comment

I personally think it is cool how the AI turns up the heat in the third. I haven't had an issue where I'm constantly burned by it, but I have received some bad losses. If you play your defense solid all game, you can still stop the opposition. Sure the odd pucks and shots will go in, but that happens in real life. Not everything is a highlight reel goal. If I was you, I'd try changing your strategies in the third. Maybe your team (AI Teammates) is forechecking too hard and your opponents break out and beat you with numbers constantly. The AI will learn how you play by the third period and work to beat where you are weak. The only way to stop the AI sometimes is to mix it up with your strategies.Comment

The game doesn't cheat, but there is a comeback code to help ensure most games go down to the wire. The Cpu does have a slight advantage in some areas on All Star as well.Comment

So... the game doesn't cheat, but it ensures that they can comeback and gives them a slight advantage in other areas?
Just curious... what does "cheat" mean to you?Comment

Re: swear this game cheats
Well I played 2 games tonight, each time I had to work hard to setup my goal, within 4 minutes the CPU would always come back to score. It is frustrating because I feel I have been playing the game for years and this is the first year I think to myself when I get a lead I am not going to be able to hang on. What are good D strategies to use? I guess I can just get a lead then try to hang on for dear life.Comment

Re: swear this game cheats
Changing strategies only goes so far.
I dont think anyone can deny that they have experienced the helpless feeling when the cpu hits "turbo" and you just know a goal is coming. Whether it be the cpu zipping the puck around at crazy speeds, Every rebound falling to the cpu or a cheap *** goal that a real NHL goalie would save 9 times out of 10. The fact is that the Momentum in this game is just far to influential.
As 547 says about the tape to tape passing, When you add in AI advantages in the ability to zip the puck around accurately with no error, collection of rebounds and cheap goals is it any wonder guys genuinely feel cheated? We have to work our asses of for a goal, Most of the time it feels rewarding to score but for all that hard work to be undone by a soft short side goal or a unscreened trickler along the ice from the point. Its infuriating.
I just feel that the momentum like so many of EA's additions to this series is a great idea that has been poorly implimented. I hate comparing the games but why is it you hardly EVER hear anyone say that a 2k hockey game cheated them? Well, they have sliders that cover just about every area of the game so that things can be tweaked to the users satisfaction while EA's NHL doesn't have enough even though it is an improvement from previous years.
I am just of the opinion that if it can't be done properly don't bother putting it in there.Last edited by rangersfan30; 11-23-2011, 09:30 AM.Comment

The passing thing is impacted by the Reception Ease slider being flat out broken this year. Why it wasn't patched first update and still isn't fixed is beyond me.Changing strategies only goes so far.

The AI in EA's game actually changes strategies and plays the score, 2k's AI had been the same for 7 years pretty much, that's why no one ever talks about 2k's AI because it's been trash from 2k4 on.Comment

Re: swear this game cheats
I had this feeling early in my BE-A-GM. But now it really doesn't happen to me. Before I wouldn't do anything different on defence, but now I really change up my style of play when I have the lead.
First I change up my forecheck to 1-3-1. I change my breakout to conservative, and then the most important thing is I clear the puck whenever I have the chance, even if it's an icing I get that thing out of my zone. This also really slows down the cpu's momentum.Buffalo Bills

Re: swear this game cheats
This ^^^ Is 95% of the problem when the "this game cheats" posts start coming up. People think they can just carry the puck up the ice all game. When the CPU starts pressuring, chip it out of the zone and force the cpu to regroup rather than turn it over at your own blueline. The CPU adapts, sadly most players rather play the cheat card than adapt themselves.I had this feeling early in my BE-A-GM. But now it really doesn't happen to me. Re: swear this game cheats
The only thing I find frustrating is how the CPU can gather rebounds and shoot in a way that is impossible for the user. When there's a rebound they pick it up and snap off a wrist shot in one quick and swift motion.
Unless I'm just terrible (which is possible) there's no way for the user do to this. We have the option of hammering the shot stick in the hope of whacking the puck towards the net. In that case we might end up checking someone, especially the goalie. We can also poke at the puck with the poke check button. I don't think we have the luxury of waiting until we actually get possession before shooting. It takes an extra split second to gather the puck and then shoot. The CPU doesn't seem to have this same handicap.
This also applies to the way the CPU can receive a pass and shoot a wrist shot in one lightning-fast motion. I don't think we can do that: it's either one timer or receive pass, then pull back for the wrist shot.
I might just need practice, but I've been playing this game for three years and haven't gotten any better at this.Comment
