The only 3 players I've ever seen progress positively throughout the season are Morgan Reilly, Jake Gardiner and Brenden Dillon. Other than that any player who doesnt get top line minutes gets negative progression.

I've had some guys that shot up in their ratings right away while I was using Pittsburgh in my BAGM. Beau Bennett shot up from 80 to 85 after the first season (68 points in 81 GP). Other notables:

Dumoulin 73 to 82
Niskanen 84 to 88
Orpik 83 to 88

Everyone else went up one or two or stayed. The only person who went down was Fleury who went from 85 to 84.

I signed Jean-Sebastien Dea and put him on the first line with Crosby and Kunitz after a five game stint in the minors during my second season. He stayed at 63 OVR (averaging over a point per game in 137 games) for the first two seasons then all of a sudden jumped to a 70 OVR before the start of his third season. About 20 games in, he all of a sudden jumped to an 83 OVR. Same thing with Derrick Pouliot, went from 60 to 63 during my offseason. I got lucky and signed him to a two-way contract for three years at $650K/season. I wanted to sign him to a five or six year deal but he wanted around $3 or $4 million per season (couldn't justify that amount for a 63 OVR). Well, I started him in the AHL and he jumped from 63 to 70 after a week. A couple D got hurt and I brought him up and now 37 games into my season, he's an 86 OVR.

I'm not quite sure if it helps, but the first staff type I upgrade is my Assistant coach as I remember back in the day when they first had the staff upgrades, upgrading the Assistant coach helped my players progress quickly to their potential and in some cases past their potential, so you might want to upgrade your Assistant coach first.

P.S.
Bennett ended up going up to an 86 OVR before season 3 after collecting 72 pts in 82 GP, then dropped to an 80 OVR after he had 44 pts in 75 GP in season 3 before the draft, so I traded him for two first round picks to Edmonton.

P.P.S.
I drafted Adamson in the first round of my last draft. He was a 68 OVR when I drafted him. Start of season he was a 69, I put him on my fourth line and he got hurt ten games in (4pts), but while he's been hurt, he's gone up 1 to a 70 OVR.

Re: Question concerning Progress Reports in be a GM in NHL 14

The craziest thing I've ever seen was the jump Del Zotto did in my Buffalo GM mode. 3 years in, Del Zotto is a 72 OVR player with 4 red stars. I'm randomly looking through teams for a trade and I see three guys on Nashville with huge values...Josi, Weber, and DZ. I check out of curiosity...midway through the season Del Zotto jumped to a 99 OVERALL. 72 to 99. Everything was maxed out at 99, shooting, skating, defense...it blew my mind.

I came back in the offseason and of course he dropped back down to a 74. Looking at his stats, he had 44 points and was a -21. Zero reason for him to become the best player in the game over the course of half a season. I've never ever seen anything like that.

It really seems random to me,so I've basically just ignored them, which sucks because it's a great idea. I just wish they worked more like constantly updating hot/cold streaks, which is what I thought they were when the game first came out. I also hardly ever see any minor league guys organically progressing at all.

From what I've heard you have to play players close to their role. You can have a 2nd liner on the 1st line or 3rd line, but if he's on the 4th line he won't develop well.

In my Nashville GM, I had a lot of success with my defenders. Jones is 90, I got Rielly in Fa market and is now 91¸and I had Del Zotto, who jumped to 88, despite he was playing only as top4 D. I traded him since he wanted too much in new deal, but it was great progress and he is now legit top2 D for Montreal, for last 3 seasons he remained 88 overall.
