Re: NHL 23 Trial Available Now For EA Play Subscribers

Here’s my general impressions after 1 game on my usual All-Star default settings:

1. Crowd sounds a lot better. New presentational upgrades are mostly visual and audio rather than commentary. But, the atmosphere does seem to capture the rumble of an arena and on ice noises better.

2. Ice and arenas look fantastic as well as lighting. Player hair could look better — still doesn’t capture the “flow” of today’s hockey players.

3. Neutral zone play seems a good bit better and AI seems to be a bit more aggressive. Shots were actually even, which almost never happens for me. I usually outshoot the AI 2-1.

4. Goalie movement seems better, but that being said the same easy backhand cheese goal out in front is still doable on All-Star difficulty at quite a regular rate (tested in free skate with MacKinnon and scored 5 straight goals).

5. Menus largely identical to NHL 22.

In short, the improvements feel good. Each year it feels more like real hockey. Presentation is improved and more realistic in terms of atmosphere, however commentary still leaves a lot to be desired in terms of storytelling. Gameplay has an NHL feel but old cheese is still present. A typical EA iteration of an annual release - steps forward, not back, but not a leap either.

Take that through whatever lens you will. Some people like me love hockey so much they’ll still buy the game each year (even if we wait for a sale). Others wait. Others don’t buy.

Seems like a good foundation. Sliders should help clean it up.

Few things i noticed:

1. Nice to see they now have 3 PK lines. 2 lines get pretty fatigued when you have a run of penalties

2. They removed team strategies from manage rosters tab. I see they have strategy settings in edit lines now but nothing for team strategies. Only way to change them is on the fly in-game. Maybe they want these to be dictated by the head coach as i see them in his details, just can't edit.

The game play feels more realistic...AI is smarter...I always buy it day 1 I will again this year.

Yeah agree the crowd sound better this year. More life and energy from home crowd especially when winning which is nice.

Strange that replays only show for your goals, no cpu goals have replays. Intros are far too quick, a few seconds of anthems and then bang the game starts.

I'm downloading now and haven't played yet, but since we're lacking a Q/A thread at this point I have one comment on what I've been reading....

Last year's game had an option for condensed presentation elements which I believe was the default. You have to go into settings > audio & visual settings > tab over to broadcast settings > set presentation to Full. That may be why some of you aren't seeing much presentation, unless there's a bug or something.

Played 1 VS game on series X and while i did not play much with 22, the on ice game was slow. Seems like we were in mud. Side note: i am 1-0 and can’t recall ever being over .500 in online VS. haha.
