Need some advice, possibly slider related

I just got this game (NHL 16) from the $20 sale on the PSN store for PS4. Keep in mind, the last hockey games I played were NHL 06 and NHL 2k10. Compared to my memory of those games, the gameplay of NHL 16 just feels awkward and clunky. Hustle being left thumbstick button just feels out of place, especially when the equivalent action in nearly every other sports video game is RT/R2. Collision and player movement seems very heavy and clunky. Possession seems less stable; a puck may be heading right towards a guy but half the time it just goes right through him without him getting possession. Passing is inaccurate as well; I will pass and aim towards one guy, and then he will either miss the intended target or it goes in another direction entirely.

I guess what I'm asking is, do you guys have any set of sliders or game settings that could make this game more like previous installments in the series like NHL 06? Or am I just out of luck and should I just look for NHL 2k10 or an earlier EA game for my PS3?

The controls are different from other sports games because hockey is unlike any other sport. Just learn to play with them and you'll get used to it.

As far as possession, you MUST use the right stick. It controls your hockey stick and forces your player to reach/battle for possession of the puck. They'll corral passes much more consistently.

Passing is iffy but skating is also in effect here. Going into a glide, aiming with left stick and then executing your pass is most effective. Sprinting or attempting difficult skating maneuvers and passing will be more inaccurate. Passing isn't perfect but its pretty good. People complain a lot about the passing but between normal R2 passing and R1 saucer passes you can make some gorgeous dishes. Just have to be in control and really hit your spot.

If you don't like it, you can always use the button-based control scheme. But the right stick has become so important in gameplay (WAY too important/not refined enough, imo) that it will probably put you at a disadvantage.

And yes, there are some people who do great work on slider sets on here that you might want to try out before looking elsewhere for a hockey game.

Yeah I guess I'm looking for a more casual experience then. I want my skater to grab the puck when it's close to him. I want to worry about spacing and creating offense, not having my stick on the proper side. I've used hybrid controls since I got the game. As for the hustle thing, even in other hockey games it used to be right trigger. I looked NHL94 controls but using Square for hustle seems even more awkward than left stick button, and with this control set you can't even choose whether to do slapshot or wrist shot. I've looked at quite a few different slider sets and put together something that I think will make this better, but I haven't had a chance to try them out in game yet. Anyway thanks for the advice, cheers.

I'll try to remember to grab my sliders for you. I'm definitely a casual fan/player and have found some that work really well for me. In fact, they might work too well...I've gone to shootouts a LOT! If it helps, I started with these sliders and tweaked from there:
