It matters a lot, and always has because the NHLPA licensing agreement makes it so rookies cannot be represented on their NHL team in game until they have played a game in real life. Been like that for years and years.

Here's the deal to best of my memory. EA will release an opening night roster soon but all the rookies and potential Calder finalists will vanish or be on their minor league team with bad over all ratings. Anyone who played college hockey last season won't be in the game. Once players have 10 NHL games under their belt and AHL players sign EA releases another roster. Unfortunately this isn't until very late October early November. So if your looking for the best roster for franchise or Season mode you need to wait until then. Some of this is EAs fault some of it isn't. I will bang this gong one more time......all of this is avoided with a simple roster share.

As far as I know not one single reason or excuse was ever given. It sounds childish but at this point I feel like they do it to smite the hardcore community that is so rightfully critical of their product. It's a simple feature around for a long time in other sports games and without a valid reason given after so many years of asking for it that's all I can come up with. I have read quotes from Rammer that are clear digs at us hardcore sim guys so that honestly wouldn't surprise me
