Defense-Low rated goalies

Hey guys I'm trying to do a rebuild in my franchise mode and was just wondering if you had any tips for playing better defense and winning games with a goalie who's rated below 85? It seems like no matter what I do: out attack, outshoot, and outhit my opponent they end up with 5 goals on 20 shots because my goalie is poorly rated.

I could just trade for an insanely good goalie but that's a boring way to go about a rebuild and not that realistic. Any help is appreciated.

Better Defence is not possible. It is the Problem of the worse AI in the Defence zone.
