Re: Atmosphere missing
Agreed with everything that's been said. I understand that they didn't want to continue to pay licensing fees for legit goal songs, but custom soundtracks seems like such an easy solution. I'm not a game developer, so maybe it's more difficult than that. As an aside, it's crazy to me that the only 2 options for menu music is non-editable trash soundtrack and the "NHL Theme" that's at least 4 years old. I've just turned off the menu music and hit Spotify in the menus and stop it before puck drop. It's a pain, but...first world problems, I guess.
I'm not going to go overboard in trashing the devs, because the game is still great despite its shortcomings. Go back to the era around NHL 2002 with the overboard commentary, the breakaway cutscenes, Swiss cheese goalies, and the cannon blast sound effects...it was a joke. That's why 2K was able to dominate right out of the gate. EA's game really has come a long way from what it was at one point. I do agree that online/HUT is killing this franchise. I have about 5 or 6 friends who don't know the first thing about hockey, but they all buy the game every year strictly for EASHL play...I can get through about 5 games a year with them before I give up on it.
The only times I've skipped out on EA's game since the very first one on Genesis were 2003-2005, when 2K was coming out and brought a more sim-based (for the time) game. Even NHL 2k1 on Dreamcast was a breath of fresh air, despite its clunkiness and quirks. There's no competition anymore to force EA's hand at adding or changing direction on anything, which is a shame. Like most of us here, I'm almost exclusively an offline player looking for the best representation of the game. Despite the gripes, I'm holding out hope that it can be done because we're not terribly far off.
