    Franchise Mode scouting

Ok, I'm just now learning that the auto-scouting is broken in NHL 21. Trying to come up w/ some work arounds that are not too time consuming. Thought I'd come here and see what you all were doing for scouting.

I don't play w/ Fog of War on, so I generally just fire all of my NHL and minor league scouts and replace them w/ more amateur scouts. My thinking is that having more scouts would cover more ground. I dunno...

Interested in hearing what other scouting strategies are out there.

Here is what I have been doing.....Fog of War is off and I have all 20 scouts as amateur scouts. I go to View Draft Class and target the goalies I would like first. Then go to Assign Scout and assign the rest of the players to the various scouts that I want to scout. This usually takes the scouts through December or even February.

I then re-scout players as needed after the scout finishes his assignments, but usually don't do anything more with goalies at this point. Once I get to May I pretty much have the info I need on most skaters and then finish up the goalies and just do the little bit needed here and there on a few skaters. This takes me to the draft.

It's somewhat time consuming, but I've always wanted to do manual scouting anyway instead of auto-scouting so that I knew I was scouting the players I wanted to.

      Thank you...This helps.

Is there a formula for what players I should be looking for? Type of goalies/forwards/defensemen? Like I know in year's past it was said to avoid grinders. Wondered if it were still true that certain types of players develop/sim better than others.

Scouting is a MAJOR part of this game and there are NO time saving shortcuts that will help you. NHL21 has 1 major broke thing. The goalies do NOT show up when assigning scouts. The fix currently is to VIEW the DRAFT CLASS then select the goalies you want to scout. I also turn OFF Auto Scout. I want to be hands on when scouting and telling my scouts who to look at specifically.

Once they patch this problem here is what i always do when starting a FRANCHISE. I will say that OWNER mode and FOW is OFF.

          1. Dont FIRE you NHL/AHL scouts . Most of them are A+ in one or more Amateur leagues(OHL, QMJHL, WHL, USA) so use that to your advantage.
          2. Scout SETUP - 20 MAX Scouts - 2- Russia, 1 or 2 SHL, 1 or 2 LIIGA, 2 Europe, 1 each for all 3 USA leagues, 3 OHL, 3WHL and 3 QMJHL.

So far in my Franchise the 1st and 2nd year scout pool is no good almost BAD. The highest ranked scout was a B-. so Hire him and fire your worst overall scout.

          3. IMPORTANT - you really need to know both of your rosters(NHL/AHL) so you know what you need. You cant have a team full of non future NHLers in the AHL or in a few years your toast.

          4. CHL scouting - Each league will have 3 scouts. Assign 1 scout to do Forwards and Defense, 1 scout to do Defense and goalies. The 3rd scout will do lower ranked players(150-200).

          5. Here is the most important step at least for me. make sure you pay attention to your record and where you are starting FEB 1. This will help you scout the players where you are projected to finish. now once you hit FEB you have to make sure you identify players that may be later picks but are considered a steal.(compare SCOUT Ranking and National Ranking) if you see a guy that is ranked 85 but your scout say 60. Scout that guy until 100% to know if he is a real steal.

          6. USE your DRAFT BOARD for your potential picks. APRIL MAY and JUNE you should have all scouts in a region scouting maybe 3 or 4 players. I usually know who my picks are going to be before the 2nd round of the playoffs or MID-May. This helps big time because it also help you determine if you can free up some space for Free Agents by trading a declining overpaid 3rd line player.

A few other tips to help -

I HATE picks above the 4th Round so I will always use 5th, 6th and 7th picks in trades. I will also at the draft trade 3 for 1. example: my 2021 5th,6th and 7th for a 2022 3rd or 4th from a team that is picking near the top. Most teams will do this to add the prospects.

The highest ranked player available is NOT always the BEST Available. look at stats for at least 10 players after your pick when its your turn. if a better player is available later trade down.

Take your time with scouting there is no quick easy route. I spend at least an HOUR real time every day in the prospect list.

          Hope this helps!!

yah ... don't use auto scouting in rules section , always set this option to None, and send out scouts manually , don't use auto scout, just assign scouts to players manually, u can scout like 50 at a time, make sure u scout all characteristics . I usually scout like 10-15 for Center's and 10 for Left Wings and 12 for Right Wings and 10 for defensemen and 10 for goalies.

but beware of the return time of scouts, sum scouts return late.

When they patch the scouting, will it affect my current franchise, or will I have to start a new one to get the fixed version of scouting?

No it shouldn't affect it at all.. It a patch to fix the issues and should only do that.

What I've found is if you put scouting on manual and set all your scouts to "Discover Players" for the whole year, you'll at least get exact player types for nearly every player in the regions you scouted

                          YUP!!

ALL NHL and AHL scouts are A+ in one or more leagues(CHL,OHL,WHL,US)

You can capitalize on not having to find better scouts for these areas if you move them to each appropriate League.

I have found that it takes 3 years to get scouts that are able to be hired that are rated hire then C.

                          Hope this helps.

True..but to make the right call on who to draft in the later rounds you really need as much data as possible..

So far my best pick in Franchise is a 17 yr old HIGH ELITE Sniper RW from the DEL. He was scouted 6 times by my scout with 4 bars for everything. So I knew he was guaranteed to be at least MED ELITE. He was Ranked 665 to start the year. I took him at like 150 or so.. By far the steal of the draft.

I have seen some other LOW ELITE players drafted in the 6th and 7th Rounds too..

when drafting in NHL 21 since i havnt played a NHL game in like 3 years or so? no matter what they are if its European or CHL do u only hold onto their rights for 2 years if they arent NHL or AHL ready?
