EA Couldn't Get Rogan to Record New Commentary for UFC 3 B/C He Hates Voiceover Work

    Quote from the article.

According to UFC 3 creative director Brian Hayes, Rogan's hatred of doing voiceover work is both upfront and well-known. "Joe Rogan absolutely hates doing voiceover for the game," said Hayes. "We've basically come to an agreement that we're not going to ask [Rogan] to do it anymore because he hates it."

While Rogan did record voiceover commentary for UFC 1 and UFC 2, he apparently couldn't bring himself to go through voiceover recordings again for the third game. Instead, EA had to be creative and find other ways to get Rogan's voice into the game. "So all of the Joe Rogan stuff we have [in UFC 3] is from mining in-game broadcasts," Hayes revealed. "We don't have the ability to get him in the booth, we have to scour through hours and hours of Pay-Per-View and hopefully finding a clean sample of him saying it in a fight."

    Cut him from the game.

It's no secret Joe hates the laborious process, but they should have got DC or Cruz or Dan Hardy to fill in then. It would be a little awkward if they were commentating their own fights though.

100% explains why in like half of his voice lines you can hear the crowd in the background of the recording cut out, I always assumed they cut audio from actual UFC events.

Edit: You can hear the crowd in the background of the "wow" recording that must of been cut from a proper event here:

To be expected. I think anyone that knows Rogan could have seen it coming. I can't blame the guy for not wanting to do it.

Even though it sucks for the game because first of all it'll be obvious to any fan of the franchise that they are reusing so many of his lines. And even then, you can notice when someone has no interest in doing it, and there wont be any chemistry with the other commentator, in this case Jon Anik.

I rather have no Rogan at all for the next game. Today I heard Jimmy Smith is no longer with Bellator and he has an announcement to make. I wonder if he'll end up with the UFC.

Does that mean his commentary in UFC 3 will be cut from actual real life commentaries from PPVs? If so I think that might be better if they can cut it properly. The enthusiasm and excitement in his voice when something happens would be great to capture. In the prior two games, where he did the voice commentary, you could tell it wasn’t the same

I do not understand how the standard for MMA games has dropped so incredibly low.
What are you talking about? The game IS complete. If Joe doesn't want to do commentary then he doesn't want to. They can't force him to do it. Unacceptable? According to who? Some bum on an internet forum? Get outta here.

Why in the world would they not just do this? You wonder why it's 2018 and you still can't hear CAFs names in the game, and then you see that Buffer and Rogan aren't doing any voiceover work for it. Because "They don't want to". Yet you keep them in the game and try to work around it? That's laughably shortsighted.

I honestly think sports games should be taking snips and tidbits from live actual events more often. There's only so much we really need from a voice over sessions. Hell, even what I heard from the Career mode trailer was good enough for that personalized touch tbh.

True. I noticed a lot of Rogan's commentary was recycled and it sounded like it was recorded in a completely different environment than Anik's, which I now see is the case. The differences in their sound and tone is also really jarring as both commentators recorded in the same room for previous games, but not this time. It just doesn't go together well.

I know Rogan has been on his "do more of what you love and less of what you hate" kick, which I respect and admire, now only doing domestic PPV UFC events and no commentary for the game.

It would be much better using DC, Cruz or someone else for fresh commentary that gelled instead of the recycled mismatch of clips we have now.

I'd like to see the use of new voice generation technology that can take a sample of someones voice and use it to generate anything you want them to say from there. I'm not sure how far along it is to be used in videogames, but it definitely has the potential to be a real asset.

I'm glad they're being upfront about it, but it still sucks. I'd like to see a less well-known commentary team brought in who'd be willing to record extensively, as they've done with Madden in the past.

But I'm guessing the devs' hands are tied in all kinds of ways when it comes to this ****. Oh, well. I'll turn the commentary off and enjoy the game just like I did with the last one.

I'm curious if Rogan will comment on this again.

I think a best case scenario might be for EA to add in a noise-isolating microphone at the event right under/next to his live commentary mic so that EA can go back later and extract actual VO samples without having to worry about crowd noise and mixing worries. Not sure if such a thing even exists but that would be cool. You'd get authentic expression, a huge variety to work with, and good quality.

I "heard" that Anik was really great to work with though, so I appreciate him stepping up. Everything I've heard from him in-game is really well done.

That would be extremely difficult and the mixing would be a ****ing bitch. Rogan would be speaking into 2 mics. Anik and the 3rd guy sit very close to him so it would be very difficult to keep the mic from picking up their voices. The only way to do that would be to have Rogan sit in a ****ing sound proof booth during events.

This likely wont be an issue for UFC 4 anyway. Rogan has been talking about leaving for years and he may not even be under a long term contract anymore (in August 2016, he said he signed a 1 yr deal). I wouldnt be surprised if he wasnt the guy by the time the next game comes out.

Aside from recording Joe Rogan with a noise cancelling mic, what if they also recorded the crowd from events and have various crowd sounds as well, that mix along with Joe's commentary and other commentetators' commentery.

I know it kinda sounds dumb what i am suggesting, since it would mean each line will have different crowd sounds as well, but i am curious if they use the same equipment for recording crowds/commentators with background crowd on all events, then for each line about to be said, you get the different crowd noises in-game as well?
