Submission switches

So I had no idea what actually happens if the defender gets the green prompt first during a submission switch. I thought it meant an instant escape or something, so I tested it with a friend.

Turns out it does nothing at all except lock your opponent out of the switch.
What's more, we found out that the defender's gates move 10% slower after a submission switch.

I have a lot of submission wins, but almost all of them come by way of those switches:

triangle/armbar from guard bottom
omoplata/gogoplata from (rubber) guard bottom
kimura/omoplata from half guard bottom
kimura/armbar from side control top
RNC/armbar from back sitting
kneebar/heel hook from stacked guard top

So going for a submission switch is basically no risk all reward. I thought people were just being whiny when they said the triangle/armbar was OP, but to be honest that's just because I thought going for a switch posed a risk to the offender, now that I know it's not the case, I agree it's overpowered

Re: Submission switches

Sub game is a killer for sure. Basically pure reaction time. When the standup game is about throwing the right strikes methodically over time, it's weird when subs and ground transitions in general are more twitch-based.

Do you mean 10% slower only after the defender hits the green gate to lock out the attackers switch? Or 10% slower after any successful submission switch?

Either way, it's disappointing to hear.

Thanks for the list though. I love lists!

Re: Submission switches

I didn't know about the Kimura to Omaplata. That's awesome.

Yup, kimura from half guard bottom + omoplata from guard makes it possible. I've caught many people by surprise with that

Would disagree. Good players know most if not all of the sub switches and are primed and ready to flick that green L. If they get there before you, and you flick it, all four gates fill up alot, usually enough to let the defender out. Is definitely a risk

I'm in Div6 in Ranked and in Div5 in UT with almost all my characters, and I haven't fought anyone that has ever done that to me in over 600 matches
