Re: Solid Solutions

I often use to get agitated at Solids perspective of some things in the infancy of the GC program because many of his ideas are rooted in balance instead of realism.

Since then I have developed quite a bit of appreciation for his perspective and I even agree with him much more than I used to because I see the benefits to gameplay in what he is saying, instead of writing it off as, "U must not trane UFC bro."

At the end of the day, its a game, a game that will never take into consideration the massive amount of variables that exist in MMA and is grounded by a much different set of rules. You cannot just make changes because realism and expect everything to be fine. To fill these gaps, balance is needed. This is Solids bread and butter.

We still disagree quite a bit, but the value and solutions come from the debates. Groupthink should be avoided at all costs in a GC team imo. Its downright insulting to tell him to go be a GC for Street Fighter.

I agree with everything else you're saying, and appreciate your perspective.

But I don't get this part.. Why is that insulting? Street Fighter is a super technical, highly competitive game, with a giant hardcore community, and tournament scene.

It's kind of the gaming equivalent of saying:

Go back to your own country

To an immigrant.

But I don't play it.

And do you mean I should leave EA UFC to be (the equivalent of) a GC to Street Fighter?

I'm saying your technical knowledge seems more appropriate for a game like Soul Caliber, than it does a sports sim.

Either way, it wasn't meant as an insult.

I come from those fighters myself. The idea of frame advantages, start up and end lag and all the good stuff Altair argues for is necessary to create a properly balanced game. You don't want your wheelkicks to come out quicker than your jabs. You don't want your missed spinning back kicks to have a smaller punish window than your missed oblique kicks. There should be a balance between the risks and rewards of particular strikes. Finetuning those is what Altair seems to bringing to the table. That's not just useful, it's absolutely necessary.

My (and I assume your) problem is his perspective. If realism takes away from what he perceives to be a more skilled based or fun system, he'll be more than happy to bury realism.
