GameDevs, wrestling is one the most important aspects of MMA

The improved striking mechanics highlight downfalls to takedowns, the clinch, and grappling on the feet mechanics in general. It honestly feels like two different games, one (striking) being far more fluid and enjoyable than the other (grappling), which is frustrating and clunky.

Takedowns are unbalanced, TD controls are unresponsive; making TDs very difficult to achieve. This makes grappling frustrating in comparison to the updated striking, and kills player immersion. Consequently, players are not incentivized to take the fight to the ground or control the fight via grappling on the feet.

Also, sprawls are not nearly as common in real life as they are in the game. That takedown defense animation should be replaced with a takedown-to-over-under clinch animation.

Sprawls should only occur when takedowns are defended very early in the TDD window.

Agree with these parts.

Timing should definitely be a thing too, I think it is to an extent with the grapple advantage meter.

As for the percentage of take downs landed, I guess it'll take time to see, once people have actually played the game some more.

The takedowns need to chain off combos and it would be cool to see grapple chaining too i.e. one take down into another. Also, take down struggles need to be a thing.

I hate to bring up THQ over and over, but they had a reasonable basic system.

Early denial = straight to sprawl
Mid denial = TD struggle
Late denial = straight takedown

For certain types of takedowns, they had it go to clinch in THQ's game.

they should make tds near the cage instant most time unless its a really early denial with no set up.

Why would that be an instant takedown...

They need to add pummels, underhooks, tripod positions and also wrist control.

Hopefully they add a bunch of stuff through patches.

For EA UFC 4, they should get some Greco & Freestyle wrestlers into their studios to help them out with the grappling side of things & get some more mocap action

The stand up is decent. The BJJ is decent. The grappling needs attention. The fluid between all 3 needs attention.

tds near the cage should end up in a cage clinch position if denied.

I agree 100%. From what I understand, game devs are working on uniting striking combos with grappling, and that update can’t come soon enough (if it comes at all).

Also, I would love to see chain wrestling introduced into the game. Adding that and fixing the clinch to make it less clunky would round out the game.

While the improvements to striking are amazing, they ultimately shed light on the downfalls of the grappling mechanics.

Edit: I also think EA can one-up THQ in the grappling department. The first step would be intertwining takedowns with the clinch (have this event occur more often when TD is defended in the middle of the window) and also adding different and follow-on “grappling on the feet” animations when takedowns are defended late in the TDD window. Also, incorporating grappling against the cage more often wouldn’t hurt.

UD3 was perfect in that part.

Also, if success a takedown near the cage, it should end up seated against the cage position.
