EA is doing something very, VERY right - Marketing. They spend more $$$ marketing their game than VC and EA spend in game development COMBINED, I'd be willing to bet. Why do NFL players all play Madden? Because EA gives them all free copies, systems, TV's, whatever else they want to play their game. They outsell everyone because they buy up MTV to make what amounts to 1/2 hour infomercials for their game, in the guise of a "show". Ever wonder why "Madden" is the only game you ever see anyone playing on MTV? That ain't an accident. They buy billboards in Manhattan, time on ESPN and ABC networks, sponsor events, posters at the movies, player endorsements, etc. etc. etc. to a magnitude that dwarfs most motion pictures, let alone other games. Marketing sells products, not quality - in every single phase of business in the United States. No businessperson will tell you otherwise. Even the pharmaceutical industry - how many people know the therapeutic indices, the published literature, the phase 3 data, etc. etc. about the best-selling drugs? How about no one? But Viagra is still one of the top-selling drugs because of fantastic marketing.
This fallacy that NFL players play Madden because they know football and wouldn't play anything less than the most accurate representation of their game is total bunk. They'll play what their paid to play or what their teammates are playing, because all the stuff is provided gratis by EA. No other reason whatsoever. You think NFL players aren't subject to the popularity pressures the rest of the kids in America are? They might be grown men, but we're not talking about future nuclear physicists here...
