Damn straight.... they were scared!! They tied up every football lisence imaginable. They didn't want to leave any room for TT to make another football game. Some people call it good business, others call it cowardness and bitch move. EA needs to stop being so damn lazy and make a Good Football game.

Re: Madden would be getting "LIVED"!!!

well i was a madden sheep for awhile. but you have to remember that Vc made madden what it is today well until 9 i think once tuburon took over and took out presentation and stuff. i can remember when madden 05 was coming out and a bunch of us at work was like forget 2k5 and all because we were Madden dick monkeys. But after playing 2k5 i was in the dark, but now that im an older gamer now, i want more for my money. Who cares about nfl exclusive if APF gives us total customization.
I think if VC uses things like the euphoria ai, i think it could be a wrape for EA. i can't go back to madden anymmore, not after 07 on 360. i felt like i was given elephant crap to eat

2006 wasn't an aberration, NCAA has been a top 10 title for several years now. to me that doesn't sound like a "vulnerable" franchise. Imo it's more likely that EA was concerned with protecting one of it's most lucrative properties.

Maybe, even probably if they are willing to shell out another HUGE check to the NFL. Without 2K developing a football game/engine though, it would be VERY probable that EA would get the license, who would be left to bid? Who would have a next-gen football game ready?

APF 2K8 is a good business move, even if sales just break even on development costs, as it keeps 2K in position to have an NFL game ready in 2010.

In 2004, (2k's last year in the football game market)
Madden on PS2, 2k5 on XBox, and 2k5 on PS2 were all Top 10 sellers. NCAA was not. You're kidding yourself if you think it wasn't vulnerable to a possible 2k release.

They both had the numbers back in the day. But they will have to compete for the Next Gen Sales and 2K has put out much better games and is getting mad props as of late.
I hate to rain on your parade, but the numbers don't back this up:

Top 10 videogames for 2006 overall (platform specific):
Quote:

The PS2 had five games in this category, the Xbox 360 had three and the DS claimed two.
  1. Madden NFL 07, PS2, EA—2.8 million
  2. New Super Mario Bros., DS, Nintendo—2 million
  3. Gears of War, Xbox 360, Microsoft—1.8 million
  4. Kingdom Hearts II, PS2, Square Enix—1.7 million
  5. Guitar Hero II, PS2, Activision—1.3 million
  6. Final Fantasy XII, PS2, Square Enix—1.3 million
  7. Brain Age: Train Your Brain, DS, Nintendo—1.1 million
  8. Madden NFL 07, Xbox 360, EA—1.1 million
  9. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Xbox 360, Ubisoft—1 million
  10. NCAA Football 07, PS2, EA—1 million
Madden 07 was the second highest selling 360 title released last year (behind only Gears of War). Note also there are no 2k titles in the top 10, despite their generally higher review scores.

Methinks your claim of a shift is a tad premature.

Today Reuters released sales figures for EA's "NCAA Football 2005" which, compared to last years NCAA Football 2004, increased by roughly half in the title's first week.
Sales of game, released last week, were up more than 30 percent year-over-year on Sony Corp's PlayStation 2 console, more than 40 percent on Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s GameCube and more than 100 percent on Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox, the person said.
EA spokeswoman Trudy Muller declined to comment on the numbers.
Last year's "NCAA" game set sales records for the company and was the No. 2 football title of 2003, behind EA's other perennial blockbuster, the "Madden NFL" series. The "Madden" game was the best-selling console game of the year.
I haven't been able to find total sales of NCAA for the year 2004 across all platforms, but I'd be willing to bet that it if didn't finish in the top 10 it didn't miss by much.
I'm sorry, I just don't see this vulnerability your describing. The notion is especially humorous when you consider just how utterly craptacular VC's last effort at cfb (NCAA 2k3) was.

I am willing to bet it's a pretty significant difference in numbers. Also considering 2k5 outsold it on both platforms, I don't think it's much of a stretch to think, if 2k had focused 100% of it's efforts on a college game (Due to loss of NFL license), that it could have toppled EA from the NCAA title.
