clearly 2K could make much better/more effective/convincing arguments via advertising, but it's not a courtroom where each side gets equal chance to impact the jury... not a level playing field: madden will always have more counter punch in the form of advertising dollars. plus, there arent even that many TV spots run for videogames, so anyone who airs even one clever idea is probably investing heavily. they run the risk of being sacked w/ several opposing ads in return... or different media countering: any promotional things like that stupid "madden competition" in times square on ESPN, the owning of entire walls in retail stores, madden buttons for all employees, more game magazine covers than 2k can ralley. plus, that doesnt even consider the airtime factor for any ad or ads they do actually run on TV: no matter how clever a madden-critical ad is, EA could always just air the opposition constantly ie "this is our country" (ugh).

i like to compare it to facing any david-goliath situation: the underdog should just quietly hang around (...I picture 2k highstepping/tiptoeing carefully like a cat burgler around EA). no need to make any big motions. just lay low until the end & keep it close. you dont wanna piss off any Tiger/Federer/etc & make them feel like they have to bring their best.
EA is no Tiger/Federer. John Daly comes to mind when I think of EA. Not very interested in improving but instead interested in the bucks, like JD selling his merchandise out of a trailer of every event he enters. In other words, more style than substance.

I don't think they should grovel at EA's feet, which is almost what you're suggesting. If they made a funny ad, THAT would capture the casual audience more than any video/screenshot/review ever could. But genuine comedy, not the forced type we see so many ad companies fail with these days.

i like the daly comparison, but for my meaning-- iin terms of pure dollars-- EA sports is the tiger or federer of the industry right now. i'm not suggesting they grovel though. just ignore madden. there is no need to engage in combat w/ a company of such larger market share. 2k doesnt even have a product as of right now.

look how long apple waited (5+ years) to start running serious competitive ads concerning windows. this was long after the ipod had tremendous market share & was stable independent of anything MS/Windows was doing on the otherside. i think it would be smarter to just keep pounding Live & "the life" into oblivion w/ a superior product in 2k basketball. make that the initial flagship while 2k football gets off the ground.

not that a funny commercial would necessarily blow up in their face, but many people are fans of both games... there's just no need to risk alienating any customers w/ mudslinging. do what u do, do it well, & forget about sabotaging the competition. let ur product do it for u

People do respond well to humor, but I'd prefer to see APF 2K8 being promoted more in an informative manner. Answer the question: What can I do with this game?

For example: Guy sitting on his couch, with a controller in hand. A friend walks into the room and sits down.

"Alright, what's so important I just had to rush over here and... Dude, what team is that?" *Show screenshot of created player and uniform*

"Oh, that's my QB for the Miami... Sharks. All Pro Football lets you create a football league from the ground up!"

"Seriously? That uniform looks cool! Wait, what about a team for MY city, New York?"

"No prob. Once you have the city you want," *Show screen of scrolling through city name list* "then you just name them and pick team colors and a logo."

"Cool, how about the New York... Knights! Yeah, and some dark blue uniforms with black trim and-"

*Hands controller over to friend* "Okay, get to it. All Pro Football is ALL about custom options."

*Friend takes controller and with a grin starts pushing buttons*

"Hey, just wait till you see how good this game looks in motion!"

*Cut to shot of APF 2K8 cover shot*

Hopefully the viewer gets the idea they can create a team of their own. Did we answer every possible question? No, not at all. We just showed a bit of what the game can do, get them interested.

Talk up the POSITIVE about the game, how you can create and customize. Don't focus on the LACK of an NFL license, don't even mention it.

Same here. Gameplay, graphics, the works. Not two guys sitting around.

Re: "Generic never felt so authentic"

Man, tough crowd!

Okay, so this would be the FIRST of a series of ads. Make a second
one that shows the same two guys, in the middle of a game between the
Knights and Sharks. They are joined by a third friend who asks about what
football game they are playing.

They explain, inbetween plays, that it's APF 2K8. They talk about creating
their own football league. Friend gets excited about creating the New Orleans
Gators and the first guy says:

"Join the League." Which will be our slogan for APF 2K8.

BTW, posting this on my old Dreamcast webrowser, so it might look a bit off.
