Earlier this week, I was looking at the default (2004) rookies & measuring 2K's claim that the combine #'s for those players translated into a range of attributes (true). On a whim, I decided to look @ some veterans to see how they charted out & I was pleasantly surprised... who would've thought that 2K would've gone back & dug up measurements to determine ratings for old vets? Another gold star for them
While there are a few hiccups, most players translated into a chart pretty well. For example, in determining strength rating from bench reps there were only 2 significant outlyers among 17 players I looked @ from the 2001 Scouting Combine:
REPS @ 225 / STR RATING / PLAYER
37 93 Norris, Moran
37 93 Garza, Roberto
34 87 Hampton, Casey***
30 85 Evans, Heath
33 85 Davis, Leonard
33 85 Jenkins, Kris
32 83 DeMulling, Rick
31 81 Hutchinson, Steve
31 81 Jones, Kenyatta
26 75 Light, Matt
21 74 Stroud, Marcus (should be rated lower)
26 71 Vanden Bosch, Kyle
25 69 Backus, Jeff
24 68 Williams, Maurice
22 63 Lewis, Damione
31 55 Jennings, Jonas (should be rated higher)
17 53 Hamilton, Ben
***Ben Watson also did 34 reps in '04 & got the same 87 STR rating as Hampton
Speed was also pretty reliably charted for veterans, & it seems there are still different charts between certain positions (QB compared to RB for example). For 2001 again, Tomlinson & Travis Minor ran the same times & had the same SPD rating-- as did several other pairs of '01 RBs. Michael Bennett may have been the fastest straight-line player in that class, & his 94 SPD aligned with a 4.31 combine time. For the most part, these charts compared favorably with the 2004 rookie chart (example: Bob Sanders clocked in just behind Bennett @ 4.36 & got a slightly lower 93 SPD rating)
Interesting sidenote: One of the SPD outliers was Chad Johnson. Ocho Cinco (the man who just raced a horse) ran disappointing 40-times of 4.56 & 4.54. Regardless of how unimportant (or un-telling) 40-times are or are not, it is still funny to see that other players in the same event were timed using the same methods & were notably faster. Some players are unsurprising, like Steve Smith. But others were funny to see... Example: CJ's 40-time was the same as Anthony Thomas & FB Heath Evans (doh! bad day for Chad). Fortunately, 2K realized his burst on the field, football speed, pads time (whatever you wanna call it) & rated him 91 SPD, so it's nice to see that they weren't blindly glued to the 40-time rubric.
