Re: Sega marketing skills are top notch this year

well, since Madden outsold them 8 games to 1, I would say they need to do something different. By Sept I will have Madden and Fever. Who knows if I will even buy ESPN now? If it came out when Madden did I would buy it.

Yes like all the air time ESPN gave Sega last year?

But that was last year. When they announced that they were changing the name they said that they were going to have commercials by the same people that do the nike and sportscenter commercials.

The release date for NFL2K3 last year was the week of September 3rd. People said the same thing about not buying it if it shipped significantly later than Madden. Sega moved the date up and those same people still didn't buy it.

However,Sega Sports 2002 games outsold the 2003 games despite shipping late and receiving worse reviews than the 2003 games.

Re: Sega marketing skills are top notch this year

so let me get this straight....Sega has done very little advertising about their game so far (about a month before their release and 2 weeks before their major competition's release) and they are marketing geniuses? and EA has been showing multiple commercials, magazine print ads, sponsoring Yahoo Fantasy Football, and providing a steady stream of information about their games for several months, as well as having an MTV special about the making of Madden 2004 (so I’ve heard) and they are doing a bad job of marketing their game? I'm no marketing expert, but I would assume that a company would want maximum exposure for their product. Every time, I see something about Madden, it increases my anticipation for the title, so EA is doing a good job in my opinion. Plus, you are forgetting that a vast majority of people who buy sports games do not post on message boards or even visit gaming websites, so a lot of consumers are essentially in the dark about Sega's title, but have seen a lot of mainstream advertising for Madden so far. What game do you think they will buy?

For the record I buy both Sega and EA games...I just like quality games (which Madden and ESPN football both are). I probably will pick up both titles this year. However, reading posts by you Sega-only fans that distort reality to satisfy your own warped theories is always good for a laugh. I guarantee if the roles were reversed and Sega was marketing their game to no end, your post would have the same title. And if ESPN football had Owner Mode and Madden had FPF, Sega-only fans would be pimping how great Owner mode is going to be and how FPF is just a ‘fluff’ mode.

Anyway, face it….Sega is far from a perfect company. They make mistakes (especially with marketing) and ESPN football will not be a perfect game. Just like EA makes mistakes and Madden will not be a perfect game. Still, I’m confident both games will be quality titles. This ‘Us vs. Them’ mentality displayed by Sega-only fans is just plain stupid (but it’s always good for a laugh).

Been saying the same thing.

I was thinking the same thing while reading the intial post. IMO, Sega has got to have the worst Marketing ever known to video gaming. Like you said, not everyone visits websites and reads all the publications. My example is my freinds who came over last weekend did'nt even know what ESPN football was till I showed them some videos. Now that tells you something about Segas marketing right there.

it has nothing to do with Sega fans. The same arguments existed when it was Madden vs Gameday and the same arguments exists on both sides. It did then and it does now.

For one thing ESPN is the title and I'm sure Sega doesn't have to foot any bill for advertising. Sure Madden and NCAA2004 are on ESPN but they are paying out the nose for those spots. It would be very stupid if ESPN didn't advertise their own game(s) on their own channel(s). If they weren't going to advertise the hell out of ESPN then they shouldn't have put their name accross the cover.

#1 IT IS NOT THEIR GAME. You need to get that to sink in first before anything else will makes sense. It is Sega's game. Sega pays ESPN for the use if it's name, sounds, personalities. Sega does this in the hope that the ESPN license will make their game more popular.

As far as ad time and giving it to Sega for free, what dreamworld are you living in? Of course ESPN is going to charge Sega for ad time. Just like they charged them to use the ESPN name, music and personalities in their game.

And as for ESPN advertising games it puts it's name on and even caring about if they sell.... Go give Konami a call.

Re: Sega marketing skills are top notch this year

Segas clock is ticking. Tick, tock, tick, tock. They need to get all the ppl who are gonna buy Madden, they need to get thier attention. They've failed in that sense. ESPN is giving ad time to the highest bidder, in that case EA owns that. Hell, you might not see a Sega commercial on ESPN until the season starts. Sega needs to do something instead of sitting on thier hands catering to internet junkies. I guess thier being cheap and tryna save money by giving out information for free on the internet hoping that word of mouth will help them sell copies.
