What if a guy with 92 or better speed was considered a speed burner. We'd have ratings, but we would be able to look at their abilities to compare players faster. Or maybe you don't know the ratings of the players not on your team, so you only see their abilities. But everyone on your team has a hard rating.

^^^^^^^^^^^
All those people didn't understand that 2k hidded all player ratings.and give the former pros abilites that repesented them so they play just like them.its just like Madden on PS2 if you had hidden the ratings they play to what ever role are weapons they had.

Exactly, the ability system in 2k8 is not unlike the rating system in Madden in that they're both based on numbers; it's impossible for either rating system not to be based on numbers. If one player moves faster than another, there has to be some value programmed to cause that. A value is a number, or something that's represents a number; which is the same difference.

What's more realistic about APF's ability system, other then the fact that it's functions much better, than Madden's "numerical based system" is how it's displayed. There are no numbered ratings that are revealed to coaching staffs; coaches watch tape and look at combine performances to discern a player's ability. They recognize that a player is fast, agile, or strong by watching prospects compete.

To make a long story short, it's about how the ratings are displayed. Displaying ratings with abilities is simply more realistic.

Exactly speed burner with finesse and cutback ability.

Lol. None of those quotes makes the point.

Bottom line. You need ratings. Abilities alone will NOT work. Rating abilities on a Bronze to Platinum level will NEVER be better than rating them from 1 to 100. If this is not obvious to enyone that is reading this, then there is no point to continue.

Players with the fastest player on the field will usually be the fastest player on the field unless they're going up against another player with that rating, or the " fastest player in the league rating." This could be done for all abilities, and they would be reserved for a select group of players.

Now, it may have helped somewhat if 2k were more open about exactly what the ratings were and how they worked. Obviously they weren't going to do that though.

My point was that you can have the abilities system, but you add more tiers to each ability. So say if a "Speed Burner" in APF had 90 speed, you could split it so gold was 90, silver was 80 and bronze was 70.

Or Liquor, you can just have the fastest person in the league have the higest speed rating lol.

What advantage do you gain CryoLemon, by having ratings in 10 point increments as opposed to increments of 1?

If everyone has invisible hard ratings Canes, what is the point of having abilities? For people that can't look at ratings and tell that higher is better?

I'm not trying to insult any of you, I'm just trying to illustrate that all of those that say they want abilities, either acknowledge that ratings are still needed even if they aren't visible, or they don't even realize that they are asking for ratings when they describe the type of abilities system they want.

It begs the question, if ratings are still needed, what do you need the Weapons/ Abilities for??? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that none of you are casual fans and that all of you are capable of looking at ratings and figuring out who is better than who. Heck, most of you probably already know who is better than who just from following the sport. So again, can someone explain to me why you want this ability system so bad when you WILL still need ratings of some sort?

Even those that say that it should be a Gold or Silver what ever, are using a rating system, just a much, much, much more limited one than a 1-100 rating ssystem. It's like you don't even realize that you are asking for a ratings system even as you are stating that you don't want one lol.

I am totally perplexed by this.

Yeah, but displaying the ratings as numbers isn't realistic. Coaching staffs don't see numbered ratings, they see a player's ability. For franchise, numbered ratings take the realism out of scouting and free agency. If one player is fast, and another player is fast, coaches can't tell until they see whose speed is more effective on the field. You also have to take into account that players will get banged up. It's unrealistic to know exactly how much of a hit a player's ability has taken simply by pausing the game and looking at a certain rating.

That makes sense. That would be kind of like the weapons system in Madden.

I certainly think that if they keep the abilities system they need to have more abilities and negative abilities.
