Problem with sata usb adapter and hard drive

I just got the sata usb adapter from mono price and am trying to use it to connect my xbox 360 slim 250gb hard drive to my computer so I can update the rosters on nfl 2k5. However, I am having issues with having my computer pick these up and read them. Nothing happens when I have just one of the usb cables in. My computer picks up the sata usb adapter but not the hard drive when I put in both usb cables. Xport 360 and usbxta do not detect the hard drive doing either. Also, when trying to initialize the disk, I do not see anything that I recognize as the sata usb adapter or the hard drive and I do not see any option to initialize anything as I have seen in instructions on the help function and online. I am using a fairly old (beginning of 2005) Windows XP computer. Can somebody please help me? Thanks.

I notice there's space for something else to connect on the hard drive besides what is used to connect it to the sata adapter. Is something supposed to go in there too?

So does this cable work or not?

I haven't been able to get it to work yet. I'm thinking my computer is too old.

To be honest, what I did to actually get my slim harddrive recognized was by disconnecting the cables from my disc drive and hooking them into the slim harddrive.

What do you mean by that? Can you explain how to do that step by step?
