I think Gamespot summed it up the best.

Im a Madden gamer and have played 2k4 demo aleast 50 times so I guess I can judge the gameplay fairly. But Gamespot summed it up the best I think after taking my know how of the gameplay and what they wrote in their review.

While Madden is the most realistic-playing football game on the market, ESPN NFL Football is simply the most exciting football game on the planet.

Thats it, nothing else should be argued. To me, I like the slow methodical(sp) pace of Madden where I have to think about each play and adjust before the snap. Not to say ESPN dosnt do that but not to the extent that Madden does. This bores some people. Like I said, Ive played the demo alot and plan on renting the full version to say ive really gave the game a chance, but even like last year, I just prefer Madden and I think its the better game. I just hate coming on here and seeing people diss something for no good reason. I enjoy reading your guys comments about ESPN and hope you enjoy it until next season.

What is more realistic about a slower and more methodical pace?

Seriously, imo, it's fine if you like Madden is better, but if you think it's more realistic, you just don't know much about football.

Actually, at the end of the review, it basically states that the franchise mode of madden is what makes it more realistic.

Gameplay wise, ESPN wins the most realistic hands down.

That's an opinion (referring to the "if you think it's more realistic" comment)..... and yes, you are entitled to it.

Ok you pick your play (ex. Off Tackel Right), and the play clock is running down from 30, you see the D heavy in the box on the right so you switch the play to the left and the D adjust, so you put the play back to the right and take your wide out to the right and motion him to the left hoping to clear that side of the field but the CB stays so they are in zone but the LB's adjust to the left so your about the run the play but then you see the right CB sneak into the box right before you hike and you have to call a time out. All of that in 30 seconds and I didnt get anything done except use a TO.

When I played ESPN, I dont get that as much, I got more big plays with out adjusting my offence. It was fun to see the plays but its not my style.

Thats just one example.

You definitely need to check out the game and not just the demo. I was not overly impressed with the demo, but once I bought the game, I really like it.

At least rent it and try out the final version.
