I've just been getting into franchise mode for 2k4 and I'm loving it but next years franchise looks to blow it away! This screen is nice!

I'm actually very slow on the contract portion of games. Can somebody please explain the bars?

The bars represent the % of the salary cap you have already used for a given year with 100 % being the white line at the top.
