Powering up???

I'm been trying to figure this sucker out since I got the game yesterday. It doesn't seem to me like it has any kind of advantage over just using the speed burst. I am not even quite sure how to use it. Is there anything that will make me want to use this feature? Also, I'm on the PS2 version for people who want to hel me out with using it...

You have to power up, then use another move. Are you doing that?

Re: Powering up???

The burst is for more power. If you stiff arm there's a better chance of breaking away, same with the shoulder charge. If you spin or juke it's more exaggerated. You actually lose speed while charging up, but if there's one guy between you and 6, it's more than worth it.

Re: Powering up???

yeah you have to hold the speed burst button down and make the circle under you fill up. Once that happens you can do any of your jukes, shoulder charge, stiff arm, dive and spin moves. Charging up makes them more effective. One thing though when you do this your player runs slower.

Re: Powering up???

So then, when is the best time to "power up" verses use the speed burst? Is the power up better to use after you've hit your hole and are more in the open field? Should I be tapping the speed burst when I'm running up the gut? Basically, if one of the veterans here could explain which situations work best for the charge and which for the speed burst, I'd be greatly appreciative.

This is my first experience with the ESPN series and I'm loving it. I just wish the tutorials or the instruction manual explained things in a little more detail for all of us that are in the process of learning an entirely "new" control system. (I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have mistakenly switched defenders when thinking I was sprinting to the ball carrier on defense thanks to years of madden/ncaa controller habits)

Re: Powering up???

I don't power up as much as I used to because it seems as if the effectiveness has been cut down. When you're in the open field but it looks like someone is going to run you down start powering up then in hopes of breaking their tackle.

Just remember if you have a power back to do the power moves after powering up and finesse moves for finesse backs. If you do finesse moves with a power back he will get tackled and vise versa with finesse backs.

I was under the impression that using the spin/juke vs. charge/stiff arm depended on your running back. Charging up, I thought, just made all of the moves more effective, in which case, it wouldn't depend on your back. Am I not understanding something?
