you cant. not permantly/easily. you could try using the sub menu to put him in for every formation but i heard that caused other problems. sorry.

I sub Derrik Brooks into Nickel formation from outside to middle linebacker and it's no problem substituting by package. I don't play a whole lot--no time, but it seems to be fine when I do play.

Most subbing of players works fine – it’s just that some players can get stuck in the wrong positions. My WR got stuck as my punter and I had to manually insert my P whenever I played a new game. Last year the formations reset back to their default whenever you started a new game, but not this year. I ended up creating a new roster because my first one was all messed up from making in-game substitutions that never reset afterwards. Now I just don’t ever use the in-game sub screen: I create playbooks and do any subbing right in them.

Another thing: after fiddling around with the playbook sub screen for a couple of hours, it’s looking like VC took away the option to put first stringers in on special teams. The default players are second and third stringers, and whenever I go to replace them with the first string guy in a particular position, it won’t let me. That’s REAL bad if that’s actually the case, because I feel one of the great things about ESPN has been all the editing options people are allowed.
