The page has officially turned in St. Louis. After years of trying to balance contention with transition, the 2026 St. Louis Cardinals are fully embracing a new identity under President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom — younger, faster, and built around long-term upside rather than aging stars.

Gone are franchise fixtures like Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, and Brendan Donovan. In their place is one of the youngest rosters in baseball, headlined by elite prospect J. J. Wetherholt, whose arrival signals the beginning of what the organization hopes is its next great era. MLB.com described Bloom’s early moves as the organization “pushing closer to Bloom’s vision of the future with each move.”

The lineup is filled with players entering defining seasons. Iván Herrera has emerged as one of the club’s best offensive weapons and could become the centerpiece of the batting order. Masyn Winn continues to develop into an elite defensive shortstop with growing offensive confidence, while Jordan Walker enters a pivotal year after flashes of superstar potential mixed with inconsistency. Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson are no longer viewed as complementary pieces — they are now expected to be foundational bats in the middle of the order.

Year 5 of the Legends Sports Universe Baseball League produced the busiest - and perhaps most intelligent - trade deadline in league history. A franchise that had never reached the postseason made the biggest splash. A struggling organization committed to a sweeping reset. And contenders throughout the league searched aggressively for the final piece needed to survive what is shaping up to be the most wide open pennant race the LSUBL has seen.

Seattle Goes All-In

Being stuck in the American League West in the shadow of an Oakland A’s squad that has posted the LSUBL’s best regular-season record in each of the league’s four seasons, the Seattle Mariners have never found themselves on the brink of a playoff berth … until now.

Entering deadline day holding the second American League Wild Card position, Seattle’s front office surveyed the landscape around them and understood one thing clearly:

Pitching.

That is not to denigrate the fine work ace Jake Arrieta has done, despite last weekend’s drubbing against Cleveland. Nor is it meant to minimize solid work from Freddy Garcia and Dick Ellsworth. But the look-around from Seattle’s front office saw a wide gap between that duo and the staffs of potential playoff foes.

Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens and Cy Young in Boston. Ron Guidry, Whitey Ford and standout rookie Lefty Gomez in New York. Justin Verlander, Mickey Lolich and Hal Newhouser in Detroit. Johan Santana, Bert Blyleven and Jim Kaat for the Twins, or Red Faber, Ted Lyons and the surprising-no-more Thornton Lee in Chicago.

Not to mention reigning AL Outstanding Pitcher and MVP Lefty Grove alongside Rube Waddell and Eddie Plank in Oakland.

Seattle (60-50, t-2nd wildcard) needed help and they knew it. They also knew they couldn’t sacrifice their biggest cogs - Griffey, Rodriguez and Ichiro - in a deal. So they were going to have to get creative, and perhaps take a shot on a standout pitcher not having a standout season. And that meant finding trade partners whose own weaknesses Seattle could help address.​
