2024 TCU Horned Frogs Preseason Report

    TCU Horned Frogs:
Only 10 starters returned for Sonny's last season, and the stepback many expected came to fruition in 2023. TCU went 5-7 and regressed mightily on offense. The outlook is somewhat different this season with 16 returners back from 2023. After Sonny's firing and the hiring of Coach Otis Revolt, the Horned Frogs are looking to sneak up on some folks once more in the Big 12.

    Offense
Redshirt sophomore Josh Hoover is the expected starter for TCU after he started six games last season. Hoover – thrust into action due to injury – completed 62.3% of attempts for 7.4 yards per attempts and 13 touchdowns as a starter. The sophomore will have to cut down on turnover-worthy plays (12) this season, but his 84.3 PFF passing grade when kept clean signified an ability to keep the offense on track when he was protected.

    Defense
One of the sneaky surprises of last season for TCU was a defense that performed statistically better than the group that made it to the College Football Playoff. The Horned Frogs allowed just 4.0 yards per carry, 27.8 points per game and 5.6 yards per play. This season, nine starters return from that unit.

An expected weakness for TCU will likely be the secondary. Cornerback Josh Newton was a fifth-round draft pick, and safety Mark Perry departed in the offseason. With those two in the lineup, the Horned Frogs finished 83rd in opponent EPA per dropback. Despite the addition of some transfers, this group is likely to finish no better than that mark this season.

    Outlook
Everything for TCU hinges on the play of Hoover. If he can take a legitimate step forward as a quarterback, this group could compete for a Big 12 title. The schedule is daunting, but they draw most of the big boys at home. Abbott has shown an ability to get the most out of an offense, and this group has more than last season. Don’t be shocked to see TCU floating around the top of the league near season’s end.

    Pick: Over 7.5 Wins

    Aug. 30: TCU at Stanford

This season-opening game should be a showcase of TCU’s improvements on both sides of the ball. The Frogs should add one more to the win column against Stanford as they are 3-0 against them all-time. Their last matchup was in 2017, and although close, TCU came out on top 39-37. In the 2023-24 season, Stanford was ranked second-to-last with a 2-7 Pac-12 record, and that alone speaks for itself.

    Prediction: TCU 45, Stanford 3

Re: TCU's March to Legendary Status

In an exhilarating season opener on August 30, 2024, TCU dominated Stanford with a final score of 51-25. The game was highlighted by a stellar performance from TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, who threw for 266 yards, leading his team through a high-scoring affair. Hoover's precision and poise allowed TCU to execute their game plan effectively and capitalize on key opportunities.

Stanford's Ashton Daniels also had a notable game, throwing for 316 yards and two touchdowns. However, Daniels’ performance was marred by three crucial interceptions. The turnovers proved to be game-changing, as two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns by TCU’s defense, which was instrumental in tilting the game in TCU’s favor. These defensive touchdowns not only highlighted TCU's ability to capitalize on mistakes but also demoralized the Stanford offense.

On the receiving end for TCU, Eric McAlister emerged as a standout player, catching five passes for 85 yards. His contributions were crucial in maintaining TCU’s offensive rhythm and keeping the chains moving. The TCU defense, meanwhile, was equally impressive, recording four sacks throughout the game. Namdi Obiazor was particularly effective, contributing two of these sacks and applying consistent pressure on Stanford’s quarterback.

Overall, TCU's well-rounded performance—highlighted by effective offense, opportunistic defense, and significant special teams plays—demonstrated their readiness for the season ahead. With this impressive start, TCU is poised to build on their success as they prepare for their next matchup against FCS Midwest at home on September 7th, 2024.

          Overview:

Following a dominant 51-25 victory over Stanford, TCU has successfully added two new recruits to their roster. This impressive performance on the field has undoubtedly bolstered the Horned Frogs' appeal to prospective talent.

          New Commitments:

          Sinilau Tuipulotu
          Position: Cornerback (CB)
          Rating: 2-Star
Analysis: Tuipulotu brings a competitive edge to TCU's defensive backfield. His ability to cover receivers and provide depth in the secondary will be valuable as the Horned Frogs aim to strengthen their pass defense.

          Rating: 2-Star
Analysis: Cologne's commitment adds crucial depth to TCU's defensive line. His presence will help bolster the interior defense and improve the team's ability to control the line of scrimmage.

          Impact:

Yes they do. Next game is against an FCS which should be a cakewalk. Then conference play begins.

              FCS at TCU (Cowtown Kickoff)

Also coming off a losing season, FCS Midwest Coyotes enter Amon G. Carter stadium looking for an upset against TCU. Midwest got a taste of the Big 12 last season against Baylor and lost, and will lose again against the Frogs. Coach Revolt and his squad will have another low-pressure opportunity to show off the team and gain more confidence moving into Big 12 play.

Prediction: TCU 39, FCS Midwest 7

Game Report: TCU vs. FCS Midwest
                September 7, 2024 - Home Opener

TCU opened at home with a solid victory over FCS Midwest, winning 45-28. The Horned Frogs' defense made a significant impact, notching 6 sacks and forcing three interceptions. Abe Camara led the way in the secondary with two of those interceptions, providing crucial turnovers that helped seal the game. Johnny Hodges also contributed defensively with 1.5 sacks, adding to TCU's pressure on FCS Midwest's offense.

                  Sept. 14: UCF at TCU

TCU will start conference play with a dominating win over UCF. The Knights are still trying to answer some questions about their offense with KJ Jefferson transferring in from Arkansas coming in as their new QB1 and a questionable offensive line despite having talent in RB room. TCU’s starting quarterback Josh Hoover already has Big 12 experience under his belt, and the improvements on the offensive and defensive line will cause UCF to crumble.

                  Prediction: TCU 27, UCF 3

                    Game Report: UCF at TCU
September 14, 2024 = Big XII Conference Opener

TCU emerged victorious in their Big XII Conference opener against UCF, securing a 31-17 win on September 14, 2024. Quarterback Josh Hoover led TCU’s offense with 236 passing yards, but he was unable to find the end zone, throwing no touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, Cam Cook provided a steady presence, rushing 14 times for 64 yards and scoring one of TCU's touchdowns. Wide receiver Eric McAlister was Hoover's primary target, leading all receivers with 7 catches for 84 yards.

TCU's defense played a pivotal role in the win, recording three sacks and consistently applying pressure on UCF’s offense. Defensive back Austin Jordan made a key play, intercepting a pass and returning it for a touchdown — one of two interceptions for TCU on the day. The Horned Frogs' ability to capitalize on turnovers and defensive stops was a critical factor in their victory.

With this win, TCU starts their conference play on a strong note and will look to continue their momentum in their next game against SMU on September 21st.

                      Sept. 21: TCU at SMU

Fans of either team remember the atrocity that was the Iron Skillet showdown in 2022, where temperatures were scorching and Gerald J. Ford stadium ran out of water. This is SMU’s first year in the ACC, and the Mustangs are coming off their first conference title in 40 years with an 11-3 record, so the game could be a coin-flip. The Frogs have held onto the skillet for the last two years in a row, and will barely hold onto it this year. In a close contest, they will remain in possession. The consecutive wins will give Coach Revolt and the Frogs the momentum to keep the streak alive. and send the Mustangs packing.

                      Prediction: TCU 28, SMU 21

Recruiting Report: TCU's Momentum Continues with New Commitments

Following TCU's impressive 31-17 victory over UCF, the Horned Frogs have added two new recruits to their 2024 class. Both recruits were on official visits during the game and were highly influenced by the team's recent success and the program's proximity to their homes.

                        Ricardo Yarborough (4-Star WR)
                        Position: Wide Receiver
                        Recruiting Ranking: 4-Star
Key Attributes: Yarborough is known for his exceptional speed, precise route running, and strong hands. His ability to create separation and make plays after the catch makes him a significant addition to TCU's receiving corps.
Commitment Impact: Yarborough's commitment adds firepower to the Horned Frogs' offense. As a top-tier wide receiver, he has the potential to make an immediate impact on the field, providing a reliable target and enhancing the passing game.

                        Lee Pineda (2-Star LG)
                        Position: Left Guard
                        Recruiting Ranking: 2-Star
Key Attributes: Pineda is a gritty and tough offensive lineman known for his work ethic and physicality in the trenches. His solid technique and strength in run blocking make him a valuable asset to TCU's offensive line.
Commitment Impact: While Pineda may not have the highest recruiting ranking, his commitment is crucial for building depth and competition within the offensive line unit. With development, he could become a key contributor in the years to come.

Overall Impact: These commitments are a testament to TCU's rising profile in the college football landscape. The Horned Frogs continue to attract talent that aligns with their vision and success on the field. Both Yarborough and Pineda will be essential pieces in the team's future, and their decisions to commit underscore the program's growing appeal.

TCU fans can look forward to seeing these recruits contribute to the team's continued success in the Big 12 and beyond.

Hoover looks like he's made some plays, but interceptions seem to keep biting him.

Nice job getting the 4* WR this early in the recruiting process
