Louisville-Kentucky Preview

The fight for the Governor's Cup reconvenes this weekend as both Kentucky and Louisville square off at the Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington.

The Wildcats will hope to taste victory over their bitter rivals for the first time since 2002, as the Cardinals have won the previous two encounters quite easily.

Wildcats coach Jonathan Ingram has never coached a rivalry game as big as this in his short time as a college football coach but recognises the huge significance a win would be for his program.

"I've coached for the Williams Trophy [Tulsa versus Rice] so I know how excited fans can get before a rivalry game but obviously this weekend will be more magnified", stated Ingram.

This game is usually the first encounter for both sides but Kentucky opened up their campaign with a convincing 38-13 win over I-AA Western Kentucky, whilst Louisville began the season with a 34-13 loss to UCLA.

"I was really pleased that we were able to play a game before our encounter with Louisville", said Ingram.

"When a new coach comes in it's always a difficult process for the players, especially when they have to learn a new playbook."

"In some ways it's like having a whole roster full of freshman because everyone has to start from page one again. But the players have been magnificent since I've been here and have picked up things pretty quickly".

A prediction for this weekend?

"It's going to be a difficult game. Even though we're the home team we're still the underdogs in this one. I can't give a prediction because I'm biased but I want my players to work hard and to leave everything out there on the field. It's what the fans expect, especially when there's local bragging rights at stake."

Michael Bush had a career day as he completed 14 of 24 passes for 393 yards and five touchdowns to make sure Louisville reclaimed the Governor's Cup for another year.

Leading up to the game Kentucky head coach Jonathan Ingram promised to open up the playbook more for quarterback Andre Woodson, and he was true to his word. Woodson was 21 of 32 for 213 yards and an interception.

"Regardless of the score I thought we did ok on the offensive side of the ball but we gave up big play after big play on defense and that ultimately lost us the game", stated Ingram.

"I'll take nothing away from Micheal Bush's performance, as he was magnificent, but we did make it too easy for him at times."

"We were also not good enough on third down and that's something we'll have to work on next week."

As the game wore on more wrinkles appeared in the Wildcat's playbook as senior cornerback Warren Wilson ran the option on a few occasions, most notably a nine yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter. He also posted four tackles on defense.

Kicker Taylor Begley was a perfect three for three on field goals from 23, 33 and 34 yards out.

Kentucky will now begin a three game road trip, starting next week in Kansas to take on the Jayhawks.

Juco transfer Bubba White will not travel with the team over the next three weeks after breaking his finger.

Taylor Begley was a perfect three for three on field goals, including a 36-yard effort with just under eight minutes remaining to push Kentucky (2-1) in front for good.

The Wildcats opted for more emphasis on the passing game as Andre Woodson racked up 345 yards in the air with one interception.

Draak Davis collected 126 yards combined, with 39 yards on the ground and 87 yards through the air.

"Andre [Woodson] was very composed out there on the field", commented coach Jonathan Ingram.

"Apart from the turnover in the redzone I can't really fault him."

The Wildcats had to orchestrate a fourth quarter comeback as they ended the third quarter down 21-13.

With the help of Woodsons' arm he helped drive his team down the field, with fullback Alexis Bwenge puncturing it in from just four yards out. Bwenge was then called upon again as he converted the two-point conversion.

After a three and out Kansas had to punt the ball back and the Wildcats drove down the field again, this time settling for just a field goal, but it turned out to be all they needed in the end.

Kentucky did actually take a 10-0 lead into the second quarter but the Jayhawks scored two touchdowns, before a late Kentucky field goal made the score 14-13 in Kansas' favour going into half-time.

Kansas' quarterback Brian Luke scored three touchdowns, with two of them coming from one yard runs on third-and-goal situations.

This game was significant by the fact that Kentucky coach Jonathan Ingram could have been marching the sidelines on the opposite end of the field, had he decided to join Kansas instead. Texas Tech were also rumoured to be courting the former Tulsa coach during the off-season.

The Wildcats begin their SEC schedule next week when they take on ranked opponent (#7) Alabama (1-0) on the road.

Senior cornerback Warren Wilson was shaken up in the second quarter but eventually made his return to the game to finish with five tackles, as well as returning a kickoff for 54 yards.

Wildcats' coach Jonathan Ingram was unbeaten in 15 conference games before today (all with Tulsa) but he surely could not have imagined that it would have been extended.

Andre Woodson tossed a touchdown pass, and Alexis Bwenge ran for two more, as Kentucky pulled off a huge shock over seventh ranked Alabama on the road in their SEC opener.

In dreary conditions the Crimson Tide were dealt a major blow on their first drive when quarterback Brodie Croyle hobbled off with a knee injury, which he would never return from.

Backup Spencer Pennington finished off the drive with a 22-yard pass to Richard Garrett to give Alabama an early 7-0 lead.

Kentucky replied on the next drive when Woodson found Keenan Burton in the endzone to tie it at 7-7.

After a three and out Alabama punted the ball back to Kentucky who duly drove down the field, which resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run from Bwenge.

With only seconds to go in the first quarter Pennington found Greg Wright along the sidelines, who then ran in for a 58-yard score to even it at 14-14.

Pennington was looking more and more comfortable as the game went on, so it came as no surprise when the senior found Gus Brown for another touchdown to give Alabama the lead again.

During this period Kentucky had been frustrated, after going three and out on consecutive drives, but managed to orchestrate a touchdown drive of their own as Bwenge plunged in for a 1-yard score.

The Wildcats were then presented with the perfect opportunity late in the first half, when Woodson found Burton with a 50 yard completion with just one second remaining but sadly couldn't capitalise. Kicker Taylor Begley saw his effort go wide left to see both teams go into the locker rooms at 21-21.

The opening drive of the second half was much better for Kentucky though as true freshman Deshan Lawrence ran in for a 2-yard score to give the Wildcats the lead for good.

In the fourth quarter Begley had another opportunity, this time from 37 yards out, and he split the uprights to increase Kentucky's lead to ten.

Pennington connected with Darren Jacobs for a 15-yard touchdown pass but it was too little too late as the Wildcats successfully ran down the clock to stun the full house in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

It gave coach Ingram a signature win in his fourth game at Kentucky and at the same time put a huge dent in Alabama's National Championship hopes.

Andre Woodson threw for 212 yards and ran for four touchdowns, helping Kentucky dismantle Idaho 63-21 and give the Wildcats their third straight win.

The sophomore could, and probably should, have made it five touchdowns on the ground but the play was harshly brought back for a holding call after Woodson had ran it in during an option play.

"I was really pleased with Andre's performance", stated coach Jonathan Ingram.

"He looked composed in the pocket, and when it did break down he was intelligent with his legs".

Idaho certainly made the game look closer than it was on the stats sheet, although these were skewed by a bunch of big plays.

The Vandals were their own worst enemy at times though as they committed ten penalties for 79 yards.

Kentucky cornerback Warren Wilson was used in the shotgun on a few occasions in the second half, and the senior didn't disappoint as he ran for two touchdowns and 24 yards.

The Wildcats now return home for an SEC matchup with Florida, who earlier in the day dismantled Tennessee. The last time the Lexington locals got to see their Wildcats was in a loss to their rivals from Louiville.

"The game against Louiville was a turning point for us", declared Ingram.

"The game came too early for us but in a way we probably needed that type of matchup, as it opened some of our eyes in what it takes to win a football game."

"I'm pleased we've taken it as a lesson and responded with three road wins on the bounce."
