Re: Kentucky Wildcats (NCAA 2004 - PS2)

46-24
Ole Miss
Auburn
Ole Miss are now bowl eligible after an upset win over Auburn on the road. Mike Espy was dominant in the air as he collected 182 yards and two touchdowns on just eight catches.

10-49
Vanderbilt
Florida
Florida got back to winning ways with a convincing win over the Commodores. DeShawn Wynn scored four touchdowns for the Gators and ran for 123 yards.

7-34
South
Carolina
Arkansas
Arkansas' latest win improves their overall record to 9-1 and still they can't catch a break with the voters as they ended the week ranked 13th. The razorbacks just need one win to guarantee top spot in the SEC West and a place in the SEC title game.

35-17
Alabama
Mississippi
State
On their sixth attempt the Crimson Tide finally managed to win a game in the SEC as they scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs are currently on a slide as they fell to their fourth defeat in a row.

In a must win game Kentucky just couldn't keep up as Vanderbilt's rushing attack simply wore down the Wildcats.

It was a game that Kentucky just had to win to avoid the scenario of having to beat either Georgia or Tennessee just to make it to the post season.

"Everyone's deeply disappointed", stated coach Ingram.

"Obviously it's going to be difficult to beat either Georgia or Tennessee. They're ranked highly for a reason."

"We've done it once before though", as Ingram reminisced about their upset road win against highly ranked Alabama earlier in the season. However, the Crimson Tide have fallen badly since (1-5 in the SEC) and certainly weren't the team that everyone thought they were.

"We just have to pick ourselves up and look forward to next weekend. We still have two more opportunities to put this right".

To be fair the Wildcats have certainly done better than people predicted beforehand, and there are signs that things are slowly improving. A case in point would be young quarterback Andre Woodson who, before blotching his stats sheet near the end with a tipped interception, was his usual composed self.

The redshirt sophomore was 17-of-28 passing with 271 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also collected another 65 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

The Wildcats defense was another story though, as the Commodores ran right through them with a combined 348 yards on the ground. Sophomore Paul House did most of the damage with 213 yards and a touchdown.

Kentucky still had a chance to win it near the end when Vanderbilt's late touchdown was ruled illegal after a holding penalty. The Commodores had to settle for a field-goal instead, giving the Wildcats a whole two minutes to overturn the six point deficit.

The resulting drive was rather sluggish though and, after wasting a lot of time just getting to midfield, Woodson's deep throw downfield was tipped into the air for Zachary Weeks to accept the easy pick.

However, the drama wasn't over. Instead of just falling to the ground the third year junior decided to run downfield with the ball before fumbling it. Luckily for Vanderbilt, and for Weeks, the ball was recovered again.

So now it's off to Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, to try and cause an upset. It's been done before, they just have to believe it can happen.

NOTES: After the game Woodson was named as a finalist for the Best Quarterback award. He'll be up against fellow sophomore Terrence McGuire from Washington State and fifth year senior Paul Pinegar from Fresno State.

For the second time this season Kentucky won on the road against a top-ten ranked opponent.

Earlier in the season the Wildcats upset then #7 Alabama 31-28. A three point advantage was all they needed again as Kentucky won 38-35 between the hedges in Sanford Stadium.

The win qualifies the Wildcats for bowl eligibility.

"Tonight was a great night", proclaimed coach Ingram.

"Not many teams come here and win, especially during an evening kick-off whilst up against a Heisman hopeful [Michael Cooper]."

Cooper was kept in check during the early stages before breaking out for a few long runs to finish with 96 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs.

However, the night will be remembered for Kentucky's good performance, and it should give them good national exposure before their recruiting drive continues after the post-season.

The Wildcats raced to a 14-0 lead before Georgia responded with three touchdowns of their own. Kentucky's kicker Taylor Begley added two field goals before the break to leave the score 21-20 in Georgia's favour.

Cooper increased Georgia's lead with a 37 yard TD run before Andre Woodson found tight-end Jeremiah Drobney in the end-zone to level the score at 28-28, with the help of a successful two-point conversion.

The Bulldogs restored their advantage with a 53 yard touchdown catch by Joel Perry. Begley responded for Kentucky with another field-goal to reduce the deficit to just four points.

Both teams exchanged possession before Deshan Lawrence plunged into the end-zone for a one-yard touchdown run, a lead that Kentucky would never relinquish.

Georgia tried to rally back with a two-minute drill but were foiled by bad penalties and two sacks that ultimately turned the ball over on downs, and with it the chance for Kentucky to run out the clock.

"My players would probably be the first to admit that we've certainly over achieved on occasions this season but I'm sure they'd admit to falling below our standards on other occasions too", stated coach Ingram.

"We've certainly been inconsistent, but we'll take that after the poor seasons that our program has had to endure recently."

Kentucky complete their schedule next week with a home game against rivals Tennessee.

Kentucky went down 38-14 in their final game of the regular season as they lost to the Vols at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Wildcats finish the season 6-6 and will now wait with anticipation as to whether they'll be invited to a bowl game this year.

"It's disappointing to lose to your local rivals at home to end the season", stated coach Ingram.

"Hopefully we'll be given the opportunity to extend our season and have a chance to finish it on a high note instead."

Kentucky were simply no match for Tennessee, who were the fifth ranked opponent they had faced this year.

The Vols were quick out of the blocks, and scored early and often on the Wildcats, as they raced to a 31-0 lead at half-time.

Kentucky pulled one back in the second half after Andre Woodson found tight-end Jeremiah Drobney in the end-zone.

C.J. Fayton replenished the Vols 31 point lead with his third touchdown catch of the day, before Monquantae Gibson hauled in a touchdown pass for Kentucky in the latter stages of the game.

"It's difficult to be positive after a defeat but looking back at the season as a whole I'm pleased with how things have gone this year", emphasised coach Ingram.

"This program was in real danger of creating a huge talent gap between itself and the rest of the SEC. I'd like to think that we've turned the corner and can now look forward to the off-season with much more optimism than we have in the past."

NOTES: Senior fullback Alexis Bwenge was declared fit before the game and ran for a combined 77 yards on twelve carries and one reception. He also recovered an onside kick during the final minutes of the game but the ensuing drive came to nothing.

Kentucky's record in the SEC was 3-5 whilst posting a 1-4 record in the SEC East.
